I finally believe that this is being released. The BBC have ramped up the publicity for the DVD-A, and Dirk Maggs is a special guest at a press listening on October 3rd.

The publicity material said that the extras include "behind-the-scenes video footage, interviews with the cast and crew, a photo gallery, the original Radio 4 series trailers, the full-length Krikkit Song, and much more."

By the way, the cover is at http://www.bbcshop.com/invt/0563504579& ... yout=empty

This is great!

Any idea if the "behind the scenes video" is more than just the clips they have on Above the Title's website?

Here's what the BBFC (UK body that certificates films) posted on their website a couple of weeks ago...

http://www.bbfc.co.uk/website/Classified.nsf/0/EDBAF0518A53C9C5802571D30034E060?OpenDocument

It's not a game, despite the listing, and in actual fact the true video titles are:

Online Trailer
Arthur and Ford - Together Again
Marvin and Zem
The New Voice of the Guide
Stereo Heads - Zaphod & Trillian

All featurettes are widescreen, including the trailer which was standard ratio 4:3 online. Approx 31 mins of video content altogether.

The "improbable speed" film on Above The Title's website showing the goings-on in studio during the recording of the Q-Phases is naturally being held back for that series DVD-A should this first one prove successful...

...Which it will!

It WILL sound awesome, of course, but...

...For the die-hard audiophiles out there, it may be a slight disappointment that this release is not a true DVD-A, as, after much deliberation, it is actually a DVD-V release. This means maximum compatability for most ordinary DVD players - e.g. your average home cinema system... This is the BBC's policy at the moment.

Dirk Maggs is anxious to point out that he is fully behind the decision as the best option available at this time. I am personally grateful that it also means the 30-odd mins of video footage I put togther are now certain to be squeezed onto this rather packed special (single-disc) release.

Who knows what the future might hold for alternative formats?

Roll on Monday 02 October...

Does anyone know if the original multi-tracks exist for the Primary & Secondary phases. If so, are there any plans for these to be given a 5.1 makeover?

No multi-tracks for the Primary and Secondary Phases are known to exist, sadly.

Yes it would be nice to hear what can be done using the latest technology. Now if we all cross our fingers and make a big wish....

Hi,

I've just nipped in here to express my disappointment at the failure to release this as a proper DVD-Audio disc, in the hope that those responsible might see it. I've just knocked this off my list of planned purchases as a result.

DVD-Audio discs are fully compatible with DVD-Video players. Maybe this could be explained to whichever marketing person came up with the phrase "maximum compatability for most ordinary DVD players". Indeed, all the DVD-Audio discs I have are currently being played on my DVD-Video player, because I'm still in the process of choosing a universal player.

There's no "die hard audiophile" thing about this. I just don't see why we should be forced to choose between CD-quality stereo and sub-CD-quality surround, when there's a perfectly good technology that offers both, as well as full backwards compatibility. Plus the benefit of being playable in in-car DVD-Audio systems.

By my calculations the disc must be 70% empty. Why refuse to use this space?

Some sellers, like play.com, are (fraudulently in my view) listing this as a DVD-Audio disc. Not good.

Please reconsider before the next two discs are released.

I purchased this while in London this past week, but haven't yet had a chance to unpack, much less listen to it ... or even find out I can, in fact, play it on my existing system.

My peeve is that it doesn't include a CD layer so I can burn it onto my iPod - oh, well ...

Er, it would need three CD layers - a CD can't hold that much

Still, there's nothing stopping you recording it the old-fashioned way...
