Hi Unno,

You have the book? Thats amazing! Read for as many characters as you like. The poetry reading, Gilks, a professor, Michael! Try them in a US accent and a brit accent if you like, whatever you think works. When you've done the 'auditions' send them as attatchments to dirk_gently_radio@yahoo.co.uk and someone can upload them all for everyone to hear.

Well, I've already sent in auditions for a few characters, and perhaps I'll send a few more later today. Let me know what you think.

Its a shame your voice sounds a bit young otherwise you could play a bigger part, but i think you did Crawley really well and you could be him in episode 1 for me.

I'll upload the lines for everyone to hear shortly.

Yea, I take care of my voice too well (I'm a singer,) so I tend to sound young. I'm surprised that Crawley was your favorite though, since I wasn't all that happy with him. Wilkin was my favorite take, because he sounds so full of himself and like he only became a professor to hear his own voice all the time. :) Anyway, whatever you like, I can repeat.

I should stress that in no way was I attempting to get the parts for all of these characters. I was just trying to give you all a choice.

I wouldn't mind giving some auditions a bash, though it's hard to keep track of whose been cast already. Let me know who is left, and I'll record an audition of the ones that are left, and email it asap.

Ok, so unno would you like the thought of doing Cawley? Also, Fleppo, what d'you think of his Gilks? I think his English Gilks and his Cawley sounded sufficiently distinct s.t. he could maybe do both...

I guess Watkin is still a very available part, other guy, or alternatively there'll be stuff coming up in Ep 2.

Sure, I'd like that thought of playing anyone that you think I should. :)

I liked his American Gilks a lot. It had a lot of feeling. His british Gilks just sounded kinda forced, though.

If you have trouble deciding on a Gliks, I'd be happy to do another scene in both voices. I have the script now, and he comes across quite differently in the scene in that than he did in the bit I read out of the book. I could record that and send it in.

Please do so. It would probably help a lot.
Could you, by the way, try standing up when recording (if you weren't already)? I have a feeling you could use your voice more effectively that way. Especially since Gilks likes to stand up a lot.

I'll send some more up tonight. Yes, I was sitting, and now that I think of it, it wasn't a good idea. In the studio, there isn't even a chair, because I always sing standing up, but at my computer, the mic cord is kind of limited. I'll put an extender on and do them standing. Good suggestion.

If you also want to send Cawley's parts at some point that would also be most excellent :-) if you wish to play him

By parts, do you mean more auditions of Cawley, or the actual parts used for the show. If you wnat the actual parts, I'll need to know what format (I record at 24/96, but I can downsample them if need be.)

Edit: The new Gilks stuff has been e-mailed.

I was more thinking the actual parts. We're in production of the first episode at the moment, you see. Format doesn't really matter, for me (i.e. Cawley's parts, I'm producing the dinner scene) them all in one mp3 file of reasonably good quality would be excellent :-)

MP3, really? I would have assumed no lossy, but ok, I can do that. Well, I may not be able to get them done for a few days, but I will certainly have this by this weekend if not before.

Unno,

I think you should be Gilks but there are a couple of things you might consider before you record again.

You wondered about Gilks' character? I think he's supposed to be a little bit gruff, although he's deceptively smart. He is frustrated, a few sighs, etc but not overtly aggressive. I think he knows what he's doing and he's in control, but he isnt trying to prove that by being aggressive. His humour should be portrayed as irony or sarcasm maybe. Thats how i read him anyway. I would advise you to get advice from fleppo because he's the one you'll be acting scenes with almost exclusively.

You should also get a definitive version of the lines directly from fleppo.

Me again. Should I also record some Cawley murmors, such as the "General murmur of agreement," etc. Or are those all to be done by others so as to sound less distinctive?

Thanks,
Unno

Ok, that's kind of how I saw Gilks in the first place, but when Fleppo said he sounded forced, I was wondering if I wasn't playing him aggressive enough. (Then again, maybe I was just too tired to give a good performance.) I never thought to make him gruff, but that's not a bad idea. I'll play with that and maybe I'll come up with something good. So, the way it sits now is this:

1. I need to know whether Gilks should be American or English.
2. I need a definite script.

Sorry if I bug you all a lot with my incessant questions and such, I'm just trying to make sure I get everything right.

I'm adding a number 3. (I hate that I'm awake when you all are asleep. It takes to long to communicate.) Anyway, if Fleppo's playing Dirk, I should very much like to hear how he is playing him. I couldn't find a clip of him as Dirk anywhere, but it would be useful in setting up Gilks as a sort of counter-point to Dirk. Just something to consider if you've got time.

Thanks,
Unno

I would post them all, but I'm my breaks almost over and I don't have time. Still, here's a Gilks audition. A new one actually. I made it more ominous, because it seemed to suit the opening scene. If you haven't read the script, these lines will make little to no sense, because it's only one side of a conversation with Dirk.

Ok, here are the others. An American Gilks (playing the same scene,) and Cawley.

Gilks.

Cawley.

BTW, I should mention that the audio quality sucks on all of these, because for auditions, I didn't really care. :)

Okay, I did not want to do this - because I have a whiny voice - but: ta-da-amm!

Waux as the Newscaster!

(Okay, I just want You to hear my voice.)

Anything I can do? any characters? big or small, riff-raff, yesterday's diapers, here's the guy to do it! haha.

but some of you have heard my voice in those 10 seconds on BBC, so if it sounds alright, I could do a small part. I don't have the script, so if someone could either PM it to me or send it to janroger.henden@gmail.com so that I could audition for a part, that'd be wonderful!

Ok, I'm planning on recording Sunday. Can I get a definite script? I can't find a final draft on the Yahoo account, but I don't really want to rerecord this all if something changes, so I'd like to get one. If I can't get one yet, then I don't mind waiting, I just want to get the mixers the tracks ASAP.

Also, can anyone confirm my pronouncations of "Cjelli" and "Arsene?"

Thanks,
Unno

Ok, just for completeness' (and boredom's) sake, I'm going to post my Watkin audition here (even though no one liked it.), and a poetry reading audition. I promise that this is all the auditioning I'm going to do.

Poor Unno, this project has run into a giant slow down recently and you've come in and you're all enthusiastic. I cant speak for anyone else but I havent time to do much work because i had a run of essays for Uni. Should've finished them by now but I have to hand the final one in on monday or not at all so either way i'll be back on monday afternoon to edit the 2nd script and start bugging people into finishing episode 1 production.

Keep up the auditioning and experimenting, you're a good voice actor

The time issue isn't really a big deal for me. Yes, I'm excited that this series is being made, but I'm not obsessed with doing it all right now. Basically, it was DipLCM's post that he wanted my Cawley parts that got me wanting to do all of this right away. If the project has slowed down, I'm not bothered. I just don't want to be a cause of further slow downs. I want to be sure that I get the people in production what they need to put this all together.

Plus, the fact that I'm getting my wisdom teeth out next week means that I won't be able to record until I heal, so I was hoping to get them done beforehand.

Anyway, until I get a final script for episode 1, I don't really see the point in recording, but I don't mind waiting.

I was also unable to convert them, because a program I use for converting .wav files to .mp3 didn't feel like it and committed suicide. just emailed them to dirk_gently_radio@yahoo.co.uk.

ah okay. thanks! not received the email yet, though. but it has to go all the way from scotland to norway, so it should take at least an hour  nah, it should be here soon.

*edit* oops, I have. in another email account. I think I have forwarded all emails from my gmail account to my hotmail account. yes. that must be it. hehe.

hmm I'll see what I can do about those other voices.

Seriously, i flipped out over your voice - its just what we need. No disrespect to ANY of the other actors but you quite plainly have a voice worthy of a bigger part.

It's a bit hard to tell with just three words, but your voice sounds like it has Narrator written all over it (if we don't already have one.) Another part that could be really good for your voice is Michael, but he's not entering the story until later episodes. Also, I'm not sure how different the voice is from your normal voice (having no point of reference,) so just try out for any parts that you think you could do well. At the very least, give us a bigger sampling of your voice, because I agree that it's quite good.
