Unsurprised that a site on the subject finally popped up. I prefer to preserve my own interpretations of the song, its just one of those great mysteries that perhaps never should be solved. :smile:

I seen to remember a transcript of the Bob Dearborn thing being published in NME or Melody Maker in the early '70s and another similar one in some of the jounals when Madonna did her cover version (ugh)

edit: Probably only for Brits
After posting this, I stuck "American Pie" on iTunes. After it had finished went into another Don McLean song, the soppy "Crying".
Am I the only one who can't hear this without thinking of it sung by a pub singer who can't pronounce his "R"s?

Actually Roy Orbison kind of fits the visual bill as the original singer - and that man had a lot of sh*t to cry about, with or without the aid of a pint or two.
