Who should the character be in the first scene that confronts dirk?

Should it be Watkins specifically, Any random professor or Gilks.

Watkins is what was written in the script, and is a character we know at the dinner table later on.

A random proffessor, or indeed Crawly from later on would allow Watkins dinner lines to be played by DNA. (Listen to the audition on audition thread, i think he's quite good)

Gilks has a nice tet a tet with dirk running through both novels, with witty cutting lines as written in the first scene.

Poll will be open for 1 day, then its decided.

The option of Gilks isnt in the poll...! :bulldozer: admin!
Update: thank you to Scratch for fixing it! (I assume)

I think it should be a random professor.

Tho I'd be happy with Watkins. Guess why...

Hmmm, tricky. It'd be nice not to infringe on any copywrite, but it would be very cool to have DNA in it. Would it be a hasstle to have 2 versions of it, one with DNA and one with someone else? Obviously this wouldnt affect which character we use (of the three).

Not sure about the copyright problems we may or may not face, would like clarification on that but no idea where to start.. might look for a forum somewhere on such matters.

Good idea to have 2 versions actually, 1 for broadcast and public use with someone else playing the role, which would still infringe copyright i suppose.

My take on it is we're not selling the series so we dont need to worry about profiting on someone else's work/copyright material.

Also something to note, there is a lego-acted version of the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy tv series for download on a lego-production website and it uses the entire soundtrack from the TV series itself.

We can ask Dirk Maggs about copyright issues if the VIP-chat comes together.

Sorry...

Why would that infringe copyright?

I know we arnt profiting on it, but it would be nice to be able to say it was all our own work, y'know? Also, I'd be cool if we could put it up on the internet, and I dont know if we could do that if it were infringing on copyrite.

What is the lego version site? I might have seen it before, but I cant remember where it is.

Sorry, i meant if we had 2 versions, one with dna one with our own actor, the version with DNA would be infringing on copyright even if it wasnt the one we put on the net or broadcast on DAC radio, altho i have no idea about copyright law or anything.

Dont remember the lego site, but it is linked to somewhere on this forum... in the movie thread, in a thread called "our own movie"

I think it would be nice to have a copyright free version as everything else (adaption, music, recordings, production) will belong to us and it would be nice if all the cast did too so if we ever needed a copyright free version for anything we could. Then again, a DNA cameo as one of the dinner characters could also be good, we could always just use DNA and then record otherwise if the need ever arises. Basically, it won't be an issue for broadcasting on air or on the internet but it might be nice to have a copyright free version to think it is entirely our works (apart from it obviously be based on something by another author.)

As for the poll issue, I don't mind. I like adding in the element of it being Gilks or Watkin, but either would be entirely fine by me. Maybe Gilks cos then we can have DNA as Watkin (or do we want to save DNA to play a more profound but still minor character later on...)

Suppose a listen to how DNA reads a few of the different characters would be good. It seems to me that he was cast as agrajag post-humous as his performance of that character was distinctive....

He could play Gilks for instance if he delivers the lines well, and then we wouldnt want it to be Gilks here!

My reason for not being happy with Watkin is the fact that his character doesnt seem to be the type to say the lines in the scene, at least compared to what he says at the dinner scene...

Ok so maybe Gilks would be better.

(Also, DNA did play Agrajag but that was ok as the BBC hold the copyright from the audiobooks from which the recordings were taken. But yes, we should almost certainly use Douglas' voice somewhere, probably in the dinner scene, because he does deliever a great performance)

Basically what I said, but well rephrased as usual, Dip

If we adapt dirk gently but a lot of the dialogue remains the same, are you sure that isnt a copyright infringement?

Well the HHG radio series wasnt (the later ones), but that was for the BBC. At least if we can make it as copyrite free as we can.

Yeah, but being based on Douglas Adams is book is kind of an obvious thing, above I meant having no other copyright infringements apart from that (and I'm not really sure whether that is one or not, it certainly wouldn't be for internet.) But then again, having Douglas Adams voice from the audiobooks may well be as that's copyright by the BBC Audiobooks so that would be kind of like allowing one to download the BBC Audiobooks which is clearly a big copyright infringement, it might not even be ok for downloading on the web. But then, we could always just do it anyway, and if we're asked to take it down replace it with a version with somebody elses voice other than DNAs.

Also, in ChrisB's audition, he does a very different voice for Watkin, so its quite possible he could do Watkin in the dinner scene if nobody else does (and Duke playing the father, Wishkres the daughter... then we just have Cawley left, which I guess we could do Douglas. I'll listen to the audiobook at some point and see how he sounds...)

I've been thinking.

The lines are not very Watkin-esque.
I'm not sure if Dirk would assume that Gilks is barging in to talk about the exam papers stored in the staffroom (though Dirk could be sarchastic, which would make it OK).
So either it should be Gilks, or just some random professor.

So I guess we're changing those lines then?
