As you know by now, I got to see the movie. It was on a Thursday.

Enough of the prep talk, here's the lo down:

Bearing in mind all the way that this was a rough cut of the movie, with not all the FX finsihed and the music score not all there, I have never seen anything quite like it, and nothing springs to mind to compare it with. Did I like it? Yes I did, very much. Did I laugh? Oh, yes indeed I did. Very much so.

The movie unfolds in a furious pace, the only actual breathers being the brilliant and funny Guide entries and the not very prominent but still emphasized love story between Trillian and Arthur. It takes off ferociously from the start, and just keeps going.

And there's something for everyone there; from cameos by Douglas' mum, details in the background which you discover with a start and makes you laugh (if you like the idea of a temple being designed after a model of Douglas' nose, wait until you see the Magrathean factory floor and one of the planets under construction there...), to a cracking new story for those who haven't heard of Hitchhikers before.

So, was there anything disappointing about the movie? Yes, there are one or two details that I thought did not come across or should have been reconsidered in the movie, and that's a bit sad. I'm not going to tell you what they are, but they will be noticable by the hard core fan.

In relation to this fans anticipations and hopes, which have been huge and demanding since the beginning of this project, and also considering that it was an unfinished rough cut and not the final product, I give it 3,5 bordering to 4 out of 5.

one question - these disappointing details, do you think they are fundamental flaws that every fan will dislike or would you say they are personal disappointments because you were expecting something else?

(for example, nic is STILL pining for stephen moore´s voice and thinks marvin was underused because that´s one of his favourite characters).

I would venture that it is fundamental, and that hardcore fans will spot it. But I don't think it will be considered a big deal, only noticed and somewhat ventilated on the forums.

I think I know what he's talking about. They missing was mentioned on the first LA screening reviews.

That being said, Duke, don't you think they left it as a surprise for new fans? Makes plenty of sense to me.

It would be great for new fans, because they'd will go "ahh, so that's why all that" and such after reading the books, for example.

And the fans that already know about it don't really need it anyway, because it's just redundancy.

Er... I'm confused. Is it something that would be in the later books? Or something that would be in the first book?

Don' tell me it's something stupid like leaving 42 out of it.

First book.

Remids me about something I read years ago (probably on the net somewhere, so you'll easily find it ), where Adams described the constantly delayed movie plans and mentioned some meeting with some movie company people who really liked the whole idea, including that part about Deep Thought. They only wanted to change the answer. But then Doug rose up and left the room, for obvious reasons.

I don't remember where I wrote it, but it was several years ago and must have been either in some paper/magazine or on some webpage. More probably on some webpage. For whatever that's worth.

I think it was in MJ's book.

I don't know what the fundemental thingy is.... Eh, I'll probably notice it when I see it.

Well, it has to do with character description, which is fundamental to me.

No, that story was in other less thoroughly researched books.

My book was the one that pointed out for the first time that, although Douglas told it in numerous interviews, the story about a producer wanting to change the answer wasn't actually true.

Yes, that was one of DNA's famous and funny chat-show anecdotes - which of course never happened. (the story is that Ivan Reitman asked him if he could come up with a better answer than '42'. )

Well look at Reitmans illustrious record!

Eurotrip, Delta House, Space Jam. Of course he could have come up with something better then 42 /sarcasm.

Character description, eh? Well if Ford Prefect can be played by Mos Def, surely this fundamental part of the character description can be stretched as well?

Oh great, thank you Mr. Blow-The-Picture-For-Me.

I guess that *would* be difficult to rationalize. Other than the fact that each version contradicts every other version, and to be fair the sarcasm thing is only mentioned in the books. I know it wasn't in the radio series and I'm pretty sure it wasn't mentioned in the tv series. But it was a nice touch to Ford, anyway.

Well, the sarcasm thing is at least hinted at n the radio series, with Ford's comment to the bar-keeper about it "not really" being a lucky escape for Arsenal that the wolrd is about to be blown up...still, I'm prepared to wait and see. If it works, I don't really care if some of the characters' personalities change.

edit....oh, hello? what's happening?.... :???: who am I? what's my purpose in life? :???:

I think the US site was meant to have the spoiler.

According to the bio... Arthur once saved Ford's life so Ford repays Arthur by taking him with him before the Earth blows up.

Yes but the point of my post Hactar, was that Reitman never said it - DNA made it up.

Hey now, take it easy and relax. I never mentioned Ford, did I? Why are you suddenly assuming I was talking about Ford?

Just to ease your mind, I'm not talking about Ford. Mos Def is brilliant as Ford.

Glad to hear that.
I love the way you all talk about something that nobody really knows what it is. Although I'm very curious to find out what it is I think I can manage a little longer without that knowledge. Everything that's been said about the movie so far just sounds awesome. I'm only a little worried on that MJ Simpson review coming up.

Yeah, I thought he would be. I'll just cling to your and Jim Lynn's review and wait till the Magrathean factory floor opens up for me too.
