so who knows, maybe mr. nell and i will be able to go on a longer vacation (two weeks) this year after all. nothing´s sure yet (bleah) but if we go, it will be rather late, early december-ish. so, do you folks have any idea where we could go? we´d like something warm and sunny. but no country where i´d need any fancy shots, which rules out africa, for example.
do you think california would be a good idea? i´d love to take mr. nell to the usa, he´s never been there...
other ideas?

The weather in California in December is unpredictable, Nell, but there are lots of fun things to do. If you are willing to go that far, how about traveling a little further to go to Hawaii, where the weather is much better? The Caribbean is nice too, I am told St Kitts and Nevis are wonderful. My best friend and her family are going to Costa Rica in December. CR is great!

hmm... that sounds tempting! good to know a bit more! i certainly don´t want to tell mr. nell all about how great the weather is in cali, only to go there and get rain and cold... well, it´s still uncertain if we manage to get those two weeks off at all. if worse comes to worst, we´ll just have to postpone it to next year. seems this goes for quite a few things we had planned for this year...

If you're on more of a budget Tenerife is pretty good, and the weather's reliable. Loads of scenery, beaches and walking, though a bit light on historic towns and old streets.

Depends what you're looking for, but it does have Europe's highest volcano, and some quite spectacular scenery:

tenerife... actually, we´d been thinking about the canaries too! good to hear we´re heading in the right direction. if there´s not TOO much to see that´s okay for me i guess, as travelling with mr. nell usually is heavy on the sight seeing part and i could do with some relaxing, too...
the volcano looks stunning!

Yeah, well we didn't see much of it on the day we went. Whilst the girls sunned themselves by the pool in 30 degree heat, the rest of us were being snowed on!

I''d like to recommend Assuan in Southern Egypt (Africa, I know, but IMHO no fancy shots needed). Warm and sunny, plus exciting places to visit.

Assuan should be ok. No risk, no fun!

On a similar region to Tony's, I can strongly recommend Madeira. Beautiful scenery, fantastic food and drink, very relaxing

sounds lovely!

unfortunately, now it looks very much like there won´t be the time/money for anything remotely fancy. that´s alright, we´ll probably go to the north sea, last chance to spend some time in that house we´re going to sell. it´s handed over to the new owners come december, so that´s really over very soon. the sun, beautiful scenery, fantastic food and drink will just have to wait until next year...

In that case I suggest either Freiburg or Helgoland, being the two places in Germany that receive the most sunshine!
