gah ... I remember the first time one of those big purple eggs instantly popped up on my daughter's head after she'd bashed it on something. Scary indeed. Hope Desmond (and parents) are all fully recovered by now.

same here. my brother was an expert on those stunts. when he was a kid, he used to maim himself on a regular basis - luckily he got away with nothing worse than a few cool scars.

Yep, Desmond is just fine, and we have recovered as well. He just now has a small green and yellowish spot where it happened.

It's amazing how many new levels of scary child rearing is. And I know there are many new scares ahead.

And now I wait for someone to run with the "child rearing" statement.

I want to bitch about my jealousy.
I have this pal, and he evidently got to shake the very hand of the one and only, the coolest guy ever, the mighty: I give you GRUBER'!!!http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0801838/
The man with a nice little tank.
The man whose regular expression is 'Oh, what a fine man he is...'
The one with a portrait of Renée in the above mentioned tank.
The man who humanized the darkest part of the last century.
The clear opposite of 'Herr Flick of the gestapo'.
Wow.
He had his uniform on, and seemed to be the same old Gruber.
I know he's an actor, but, hey; GRUBER!!!

Just one word - dumpsters. :bulldozer:

The last six months I've cleared out two houses belonging to deceased relatives living 60 plus years in the same home. There are definitely too few dumpsters in use out there...

I'm seriously pondering to spend at least part of my holiday time off from work going through my papers etc. The hatchlings are not going to deal with decades of paychecks and bank statements the day I'm off for Milliway's.

I always intend to clear things out, but I'm afraid my daughter will have to earn her inheritance once I'm gone.
Enjoy Montreal, Hooloovoo!

Thanks Dragonqueen and MG!

I'm going to be ruthless this weekend. I've already gotten rid of half my books. Have 8 boxes of books left and will leave 6 behind We'll see how much I miss them in 6 months and whether or not I send for them later. I'm think I see an iPad or kindle in my not-so-distant future. :???:

It's the little things really, bobbles and knick knacks, some belonging to long dead ancestors.

Thankfully, I'm not a paper horder. All important files fit in one square foot box.

I wish you luck with the sorting and the move.

Hope a move back to Montreal gets you back into the real world again.

it just couldn´t be, could it? something had to go wrong with our honeymoon trip, even if only with two weeks delay. the problem? bedbugs. apparently we brought some stowaways back home from our african adventure. zark!!! i have experience with quite a bit of vermin and bugs, growing up in the country, but bedbugs are absolutely new to me. it seems that we are supposed to go on a thorough bug hunt now, to prove the existence of the pest (apart from the bites which triggered my initial suspicion).
and then it looks like we have to. evacuate. and wash. all. of. the. stuff. in our bedroom.
and the friggin´ room is huge and filled with a million friggin´ things, and we already stuffed our (probably infested) backpacks in the cupboard where we´re also storing our spare bedclothes and aaaaargh...!!!
and then only will a pest controller work efficiently, i hear!
what´s the deal?
can´t they just, i don´t know, spray the whole room with all the stuff inside?
apparently not.
feck.

any of you guys had this problem? is it hard to get rid of those beasts? i bet it is...

Nice, Nellodee...
Stuff like this makes me glad I prefer tarmac to wilderness.
I hope all goes well, and the bugs be sent to outer space or so...

Bugger, Nell. According to Wikipedia you could also have an expert heat up your bedroom to 55°C for some 36 hours. Better wait outside then. Or you could go green and get in some predators but that might not be too wise...

Yes. Heat will do it..."they don't like it up 'em, Mr Mainwaring!"

And if you're looking for a spare bed in the meantime, I'm sure I can think of somewhere ;)

Nell, I have a friend who went through this with his elderly mother. All the "stuff" has been taken out, sealed in bags and will sit in storage for six months. The rooms and furniture were sprayed and then mum was allowed to move back in after a few days. It is a HUGE problem in New York right now, and is growing around the country. Ugh.

yeah, so we started "debugging" the room last night, such fun when you come home after a hectic day at the office and with all the christmas preparations looming above you... anyway, we couldn´t find the slightest trace of the bugs. on the one hand, that´s a good sign, because i guess it means that the infestation is small-scale OR (dare i hope?) it might be something else after all...?
well. we vacuumed the room, paying special attention to all the nooks and crannies (and boy, are there a lot; old buildings, i´m telling you...), then started the project "wash all there is" (and there is everything!!!), plus stuffed storable goods in plastic bags to be stored in our cellar, plus wrapped tape around the legs of the bed... bleah...
anyway, i don´t know if this means success, but i woke up this morning without new bites. could it be this easy? i guess not. we continue the project tonight. joy. if we find evidence or the bites return, we´ll have no choice but to call a professional.

hah! i wish!
well. we´ve been away for the last two nights (week-and trip), so i guess tonight we´ll see if we´re rid of the pest... or if it was indeed something else (hopefully also gone) or if it was just a clever ruse and we have to napalm the place after all.
in any case i´ve come down with a nasty cold and don´t feel up for fighting yet another bug. bleah.

That's exactly why you rent an apartment in a Tower....

Albeit I must say it was nice to walk to the Uni hopsital this morning just before dawn - the first light glittering in the frost and ice covered tree branches. It was -20,4C outdoors and +20,3C indoors....

It takes longer time to get dressed than to commute to work (my commute is a short walk - appr. 7-9 mins this time of the year)

I just learned that a member of my extended family, who died of intestinal cancer earlier this year, actually died of quackery: He trusted a homeopathic snake-oil salesman until it was too late.

Science. It works. Use it.

Don't tempt me Stej! Leaving the country is looking good just about now :???:

Keep reminding myself: :dontpanic:

Nice apartments by the way :)

Anyhow, verdict is that I'll likely take a way overpriced, but clean, flat downtown in a high rise building right across the street from univeristy. Not my 1st choice...but the only places available in my old neighbourhood aren't that much cheaper and they're dumps. Have to keep focus and remember I'm back to finish my degree. Living so close to school might help in that respect.

Might have to hustle, save some pennies and get into the condo market like every other sane person in this town has done in the past couple of years.

Remember, if all fails you can always sell your body. Or marry rich. Which can turn out to be the same.

Hehe, hopefully it won't come to that...

Well, I've signed a lease on an overpriced, yet convenient located apartment. :???: This is going to put a big dent in my travel budget, but seeing has the rent includes everything (no extra bills save internet), I might just come out ahead...

I also have access to a lovely indoor pool which I'll probably never use.

*sigh*

Anyhow, never thought I'd say this, but I'm seriously thinking of buying some property. The rent I'm paying at this new place is the equivalent of a mortgage payment on a small condo/flat.

I just posted a blog on my swedish blog at wordpress, bloggskei. I think I want to bitch about reality, existence, being as such, and some coffee, please?
A loose translation of the title might be 'Conversation with a ghost'. It's my way of discussing being and nothingness, existentialism, and my acknowledging Sartre's view to the world.
I know existentialism might be a not very 'the view' at this moment in time, but it works for me. I haven't found anything more in line with my own view thus far, so I dig.
Cartesius' 'cogito' and a personal responsibility for our actions paired with the freedom we are forced into the moment we are born, these facts sum up what I mean is my personal interpretation of this particular brand of existentialism, and going by this, my own interpretation is the only valid one. For me.
Now that's something to carry on ones shoulders, eh?
At least worth bitching about.
