Is anyone else watching this? Modern Sherlock Holmes, written by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. I really like it! I've been a fan of the books since I was a child and I thought they did an excellent job of updating it-- lots of things were familiar from the books. Benedict Cumberbatch (I never get tired of this name!) and Martin Freeman make a great Holmes and Watson.

There's only three episodes. I hope they make more!

that sounds pretty good! i´ll see if i can find out more about it, maybe some clips, and then...

edit: okay, found the trailer, and i´m intrigued. i like martin freeman anyway, and the chap playing holmes seems like a very interesting choice (can´t say i know the actor).
only three eps, you say? feature-length, at least? gotta find out more...

edit2: okay, i found out more, and it looks like i definitely gotta check this out. another cool tv concept by the bbc! while german tv continues its agony of boringness. why, oh why...

The first episode was outstanding (wonderfully directed!) and the second I've yet to see. There are only three so far.

Benedict Cumberbatch played Stephen Hawking in the BBC biopic a few years ago and in real life he is the son of Wanda Ventham (who was in classic Dr.Who a couple of times and was a regular in Gerry Anderson's "UFO" - see piccy...).

cool space lady! looks like the worthy mother of a "Benedict Cumberbatch" - now that is a name indeed... like someone out of a charles dickens novel!

The two first eps have been great! One more to go and then it's waiting time for the second season.

just finished the first ep. bloody brilliant. that benedict chap is a very good actor with a very unusual face. he´s got a good chemistry going on with martin freeman whose interpretation of a modern-day watson i loved.

 Sorry! I'm glad you liked it though!

I'd never seen Benedict in anything before, but he is very very good. He does have a really unusual face. I wish there were more episodes! It seems to have got a really good reaction so I'm pretty sure they'll make another series.

no seriously, i´m freakin´ glad you pointed me in this direction! (but you knew that) "sherlock" is quite a find - will the moff never cease to amaze? and yes, i expect we´ll get more of the series, and very probably more of mr. benedict, who must be god´s gift to any filmmaker who needs someone to do excentric/mysterious/weirdly attractive (wanna bet how long it will take someone to think he´d make an excellent vampire character, eh?).

I'm so glad they got another series, it's just too bad we'll have to wait for it!

haven´t seen the last ep, i´m trying to save it.. in the meantime, i decided i might as well check out properly the source material! i remember reading some sherlock holmes stories as a teenager, so it was only the german version. now i´ve ordered the four existing novels in the original version and have already finished "a study in scarlet". it´s a good read, and today i´ve received the remaining three via amazon! i hear the sales of holmes novels have increased by 180 % since "sherlock" premiered on tv!

I've done the same! Downloaded the lot onto my iPhone. I read the first one and I'm reading the Sign of the Four right now, loving it.

Why haven't I ever read them before?!

I fondly remember reading every single Sherlock Holmes story in a row when I was about ten. They are fun books! The series does make me want to do some rereading. I'm certainly pleased to hear sales have gone up.

i´ve just finished watching the last part of sherlock. by golly, they can´t do this to us! we demand the second series NOW!!! (when will we get it, btw? anyone know?)
whew. this is such a great series, thank you so much for steering me towards it, ob! i cn´t get enough of our dynamic duo, there´s actor chemistry complimented by a brilliant script and production if i ever saw one! also, i really appreciate the feature film lenghth - we are so trained to the 45-min-format, but some storie just need more room...

i´m going to say something completely obvious now: but mr. cumberbatch would be the perfect morpheus, from neil gaiman´s masterpiece "the sandman". i hear they are making this finally into a mini-series (well, we´ll see if it works out this time), so the timing couldn´t be better. i hope the powers that be have watched "sherlock".

Oh, I wouldn't have thought of that but I can really see it! That would be good. I'm a little skeptical about this miniseries idea though, but Neil is so good about making sure the adaptation of his work are quality.

well, i´m not holding my breath, because this sandman adaptation lark has been in development hell since forever. i´m just saying: perfect casting choice finally available.

but i just can´t get over how obnoxiously handsome mr. cumberbatch is. for this alone, "sherlock" would have been worth watching, but since there´s also martin freeman, great characterization, chemistry, dialogue, plot, secondary characters, costumes (that coat!), directing, rhythm... okay, i´ll just watch it again. and again. oblong, did i already thank you enough for this? i don´t think so. have spread the virus to a co-worker already, planning to infect many more. for this, i´ve ordered the dvd. see? i´m even being legal here! that´s how good the series is!

Yeah, the chances of it getting made at all seem pretty slim! Benedict Cumberbatch is very handsome, in a very odd way though. He's unusual looking.

Wow, legality! It must be good then!

copy arrived today. can´t wait to get home and tuck into it. i´m just a little disappointed at the presentation, front and back of the dvd case are nice enough, but there´s not even a booklet. oh well, the content is what matters most (and the subtitles!).

Mom found the first episode online, we watched it and we loved it! Any chance they'll post the others any time soon for us American-types?

well, you could always try "finding" the others online...
you need to watch them, in any case. brace yourself for the last ep. i hear "sherlock" is going to air on u.s. television - although i gather that might mean one channel in onme region. that country is so frickin´ huge...
anyway, should you be completely desperate, you can always drop me a pm and i´ll see if i can help.

We've got one of the larger cable packages here, so we'll keep an eye out for it.

I don't like going 'yar-har' while reaching for some rum and treasures in regards to technology if I can help it, so I'll be patient enough for the legit stuff.

good for you! i hear the dvd is coming out in the staes soonish, and i´d say you really can´t go wrong with buying it. me, i also try to stay legal when i possibly can - for example i compensated for watchign sherlock first, erm, not on tv, by buying the dvd as soon as it was available. hope that balances my karma...
but you have to watch the other two eps! especially the finale is a belter!

Sherlock is now running in Finnish TV under a bit silly name "The New Sherlock". Second episode coming today. I enjoyed the first one, clever modernisation. On the other hand, this could have worked well on its own, without commection to Holmes at all.

I was kind of afraid the second series would have to wait until next year, with Freeman in New Zealand, but they seem to have worked out a timeshare.

yup, as far as i know, they are filming right now! it will be so great to have new cases, i have watched the first three countless times (okay, maybe four times each, but with special emphasis on the pool scene, which is really one of the beat-realised pieces of tv...).

A bit of bad news: Apparently, the series will not be aired until 2012.

Ok, I finally watched the first episode. I can't wait to watch more. Benedict is an interesting fellow, and apparently will be doing the voice of Smaug in the upcoming Hobbit movie.

this, my good sir, is the appropriate reaction. i salute you.
keep watching, so you can join the ranks of the "argh! how can they do this to us?!".

good friends are everyhting... managed to watch "sherlock - a scandal in belgravia" (i admit i had to google "belgravia") last night and was totally blown away. i was somewhat wary, hoping but not totally expecting them to keep up this high level of entertainment and fascination - but this ep even surpassed it. it´s maybe the best sherlock ep so far. it was so complex and fast and rich, i don´t think i can really get all the nuances until i´ve rewatched it at least two times. if you haven´t seen it, do so. a great treat!

I was just coming here to post abut this! I thought it was amazing too. I've already seen it twice and I enjoyed it even more the second time! I thought they did a fabulous job, and I only had one issue with it, which was this:

(SPOILERS)
The bodies on the plane! That made no sense. I could make a huge list of all the suspicious problems this could cause. People would notice!

I loved Sherlock in his sheet in Buckingham Palace.

Can't wait for Baskervilles!

it´s true for the thing you mentioned in your spoiler. usually, the program moves so fast that i need a bit to catch up with anything even remotely illogical, but here i reacted at once, for the same reasons you did. well, we must assume mycroft has thought of everything... or i´m just willing to let that slip in an episode which was stellar all around. plus, the moment of the reveal was such a creepy scene, made for a very strong impact on the viewer (me).

i was very happy to see more of mr. holmes the elder, btw, also mrs. hudson had some fantastic moments. and poor molly! i thought her christmas party dress looked really great, but what a cringe-worthy moment the gift-analyzing was...! argh!
