ah, cags, i feel your pain. car accidents bring out the worst in people. my father (and my dring instructor) hammered it into my head, never change the scene of the accident, stay right there and wait until the police come, get witnesses, and most importantly, get the other person to admit their fault or at least put down their side of the story. you can do what you want, more often than not the other party will try to screw you... the worst thing is when there is obviously very little damage, you agree to be the guilty party and pay for it, and then arrives a suspiciously HUGE bill from the other party´s "trusted workshop"... disgusting.
still, it might not be that bad. maybe the insurance company is playing silly buggers here (as they like to do). do you have the other party´s contact details? maybe you should get in touch, try to sort this out... best of luck!

Well, I guess I've learned my lesson from this. Still no word from the insurance yet. It's just hard to get your senses when you are still shook up from what just happened.

And I find it irritating that nobody stood up and said, "Here's my number. I saw what happened, and if you need someone for insurance to contact, I'll put in my statement, because it was pretty one-sided." I've definitely done it before when I saw some jackass obviously to blame. It took maybe 20 minutes of my life (5 for the contact info, and 15 for the statement). And nobody was able to wriggle out of their part in the accident.

Weeeeeeell....
I had the back end of my car aligned earlier this year and apparently they didn't do a good job because my tires are insanely worn out now. Today I had to drop $160.00 out of nowhere to buy new tires, and I have to get it re-aligned tomorrow.
The phone bill is also due. Apparently I am made of money, which is why I have considered simply cutting off a few toes and/or fingers for payment.

Erm ... where did you get it aligned the first time? Sounds as though they should be springing for the new tires and re-realignment ...

They probably SHOULD, but I doubt it will happen. The phone call to them a few minutes ago was a "We may not be able to get to it until next week" to which the response was "Well...let me tell you about you screwed it up last time and how this car is going to be worked on tomorrow..."

The local police force.

Three days ago someone died during circumstances highly suspicious for a drug related death. The doctor in charge contacted the local police force saying there was a suspicious death. The police officer in charge decided it was not, since the death took place within the hospital borders. Thus I was called to determine cause of death.

Since then I've repeatedly tried to get in touch with the local police force to discuss the case, since I consider it to be a suspicious case which should be investigated by the medical examiner's office. Due to legislation I can't refer the case, only the police can. Even the family of a well known drug junkie deserves to know why they've lost a loved one. I don't have the proper tools to determine that.

They don't return my calls, and I'm met by answering machines and unknowing switch board operators whenever I call.

Just now I'm not a big fan of the law enforcement authorities.

My faith in the law enforcement authorities has been restored.

Finally my calls were returned and two young and very charming police officers - detectives I guess you 'mericans would call them - showed up at my office. I walked them to the morgue, showed them the deceased and talked to them. The case was referred to the medical examiner's office.

The family will get the proper answers they deserve.

Guess like mid-thirties (with wedding band) and late twenties. The latter would be allowed to ask my daughter out for dinner. *

The most important was that they did exactly as I expected . referred the case to the medical examiner's office.

*He would be allowed to ask me out for dinner as well  - but unfortunately he might be younger than my oldest son - and I don't date that young ones.

Speaking of death...

Man, I feel like a heel. Two das ago an ambulance, a cop and fire truck showed up at my neighbor’s apartment and loaded into the ambulance what was obviously dead person with a sheet pulled over the head. I never bothered to meet these people, (they moved in about a month ago,) because the man of the family was a big, burly fellow and seemed to always carry a surly expression; I deemed him likely a wife beater type or some other manner of belligerent reprobate. Turns out, he was just terminally ill with a heart condition. In retrospect I can see why he was in such a bad mood…

I went and talked to the family yesterday, expressed my sympathy and offered to help anyway I could… but I feel like I could have taken this initiative and been a good neighbor earlier. I guess I was gun-shy; once you meet somebody and they turn out to be a bad sort you can never take that action back, especially if it is a neighbor, but what I did was unfairly judge someone by the way they look and shunned them during a time of need.

Lovely!

I applaud you for making contact afterwards, I'm sure the family appreciated it. Nobody's perfect, horatio! Except for Emma Thompson.

Summer is gone

First day of vacation - cloudy, cold and rain in the air. OK, I know life's not fair but anyway...

I recently bought one of those Dazzle video capture thingies, in hopes of capturing stuff from my DVR. I've been trying for about a week to get it to work properly with no luck. I have video, but no audio and its pissing me off!

How is it connected- as in composite/component/scart/HDMI or whatever?
Some scart cables don't have audio passes in both directions. I have an EyeTV on my Mac and it works every well both for wtaching/recording live TV and recording from VCR or other video source.

Just using standard RCA AV cables from the DVR output to Dazzle input. Not sure what SCART is. I'm guessing its a European thing.

I've been browsing Dazzle's offical help forums for an answer. It seems the only way get sound is to use the supplied software, Insant DVD Recorder, which I don't like. The sound works fine with that, but it only records VOB files, plus the video is a bit choppy and audio is badly out of sync. I've been trying use third party software, mainly AVS Video Recorder. The video with this program is terrific, but there's no sound.

EDIT: Browsing the Dazzle forums, it seems I'm far from only person expiriencing this problem. No one seems to have an answer, though. This is the stock response given by the Dazzle support people:

What kinda BS is that? Luckily, I still have the receipt.....

I have to bitch about not being able to find the right chord sequence for this tune 'bebop' by Gillespie, as played by Bird. I have it on a recording. The sound is very poor, the pace is staggering, Birds sax is amazing. No wonder he was king of bebop, man, those lines. Luckily they fall rather nicely on the fretboard, so it is possible to play. Not without hammering ons and such, though, unless picking like a madman on heavy speed or something. This is so amazing. This is Bebop...
Also, not being able to find a vid on youtube with Bird on the sax, just some celebration band. They play it very nicely, but it's not the same. Not the same.
Bebop.

so today after a VERY stressful day at the office (nothing but since my return form the honeymoon) i nevertheless felt i should go to the gym. when i got out, it was friggin´ pouring down. and me with the bicycle. after a few metres i realized that the dress i was wearing turned into see-through mode in the rain. no point in trying the subway then. i put my used gym clothes on, over the dress, so as not to make a total spectacle of myself, and rode home. i was so wet, you could have wrung ME out...

ah, cags, i feel your pain. car accidents bring out the worst in people. my father (and my dring instructor) hammered it into my head, never change the scene of the accident, stay right there and wait until the police come, get witnesses, and most importantly, get the other person to admit their fault or at least put down their side of the story. you can do what you want, more often than not the other party will try to screw you... the worst thing is when there is obviously very little damage, you agree to be the guilty party and pay for it, and then arrives a suspiciously HUGE bill from the other party´s "trusted workshop"... disgusting.
still, it might not be that bad. maybe the insurance company is playing silly buggers here (as they like to do). do you have the other party´s contact details? maybe you should get in touch, try to sort this out... best of luck!

Still no frickin' word from insurance. EVIL!

Actually that sounds good to me! But don't worry....my imagination has already been exercised on the scene in question...

The fact that I got there at lunchtime yesterday (my workplace) to see if anybody gave the bulls water during the weekend. I'm glad I took the walk, the water trough was just about empty. Damn it. Those guys drink LOTS of water, even more when it's hot, like yesterday. How can they sleep at night, they took on the responsibility to have the bulls there for the summer, and they think they can fix the water themselves? I mean, they are smart bulls, but they have no hands to operate the tap. I would like to talk to those people in a dark alley at midnight, that's for sure.
So now I'll be walking there again to fill it up for my pals of scottish heritage...

Peace
Skei (the only one with a brain at the farm I suppose one)

that´s a good thing you did there, usk! i wouldn´t worry too much though - those beasts are usually tough, you´d hear them complain loudly long before they´d die of thirst. but it´s always good to care for one´s animals!

Yeah, I suppose they'd let people know if they were on the verge of dying of thirst. Anyway, I went there today too, no water, well a few drops on the bottom, that's all. They were glad I came by, and stopped and allowed me to scratch them between the horns too. There was a fence between us, otherwise I'd not have had the guts to scratch any of them, especially not the alpha one, he's the size of a small locomotive, and the horns are about half a yard each, I doubt they'd do anything bad though, they know I'm the one who brings water and food, and the times I've been inside the fence they haven't done anything but look attentively to see what I was doing...
I also took care of the poultry, and talked a little 'hen' with them. They are great, talkative and happy to give us eggs even though they are somewhat on the elderly side.

Peace
Skei (the sleeping well at night one)

Odd things are going on with my external harddisk. It will not connect to my PC, but there is no problem hooking it up to my TV via USB, who can recognise it and play the videofiles on it perfectly well.

You didn't by any chance had the harddrive formatted by the TV prior to usage? Because some TV's use a weird file system that doesn't work on a PC.

No. I actually used the harddisk on my computer after I had it hooked up to the TV. Then, suddenly, my attempts to open folders was met with an ugly "ding". Now, it won't open at all.
