Anything to report? I really enjoyed the script so I'm hoping there's been some developments

Can't believe it's 30 years since I saw them live. It was the "Two-Tone Tour" with them, Madness and The Selecter. The played a tiny club called Raffles in Aberdeen (which burned down in an insurance scam a year later) and it was absolutely awesome.
Saw some great bands that year - Simple Minds, Pretenders, Magazine, Lene Lovitch, The Clash, UB40 ,the Darts, Boomtown Rats, U2 and Thin Lizzy to name but a few. Most before they became famous and only play in football stadiums.
A great time, its a wonder I got any studying done!

I asked to read it and he emailed it to me. Has someone put the kibosh on the whole project? Seeing we haven't heard anything for like six months now.

So what can i tell you? Well, we absolutely hashed out with the powers that be over at Disney and Spyglass what they actually wanted to do, and found that Disney didn't wanted to do a theatrical follow-up to the original film. And that this was set in stone 12 meters high with a neon surround.

Except that the guys at Spyglass it seems, couldn't read. The stone, that is. They had been told by Disney that a theatrical sequel was no go. Many MANY times, Jonathan. But that didn't hinder Spyglass wanting to do it, nosirree Bob.

Disney liked the idea of a dvd premiere sequel. They asked Spyglass if they wanted to do that, instead. And, the Spyglass bods beaming with enthusiasm, promptly ignored such an idea and said "We want to do a theatrical sequel!" Again.

So we talked to Disney, realising that H2G2II with Spyglass was as dead as dodo, enquired about possible alternates.

The project has moved home, is on the desk of a very well known British producer and his comedy-directing associate, and they like the idea of a H2G2II dvd premiere film a lot. Probably more television film than full 'movie' (whatever that means) but the recent series of Dr Who has been a benchmark for the level of quality in terms of both visual effects and production values.

So that is where we are at. And the reason we have kept plugging away at the project for so long?

Because the script fucking rocks. And a kick-arse adaptation of something shouldn't go to waste.

Oh, just remembered, btw, but the actual estate of Douglas Adams doesn't want to see his books turned into dvd premiere films. Sequel yes, but must be theatrical. That kind could have hampered things a bit, but at the end of the day wasn't an issue with us.

Mike Skivington, May 30th 2010.

Sounds just as complicated as you would expect that kind of project to be. If the theatrical sequel isn't going to happen, a TV-film, DVD-sequel or even TV-series would be great. Why not doing a series again? The old BBC-version is good, but i'm afraid it doesn't work that well for today's audience.

As you said, the new Dr Who and other tv-series have brilliant production values. The effect work has changed so much, that it is possible to do good looking stuff with less money (just guessing, actually).

Of course it is arguable if filming the Hitchhikers Guide is a good idea at all, but given a good comedy-director, good script and not cutting the jokes off, it just might work.

I still wish you good luck with this.

Cheers for that, Mr. Skivington! I agree, the script is terrific.

The entire process reminds me of a certain back and forth between Douglas Adams and some film studio executive or whatever it was. The whole 'here are dozens of ways to get hold of me. If you don't, I know you must've tried really hard' thing.

It also reminds me of what producer Scott Mosier once said about Hollywood; no one is pulling together, everyone has their own agenda.

I have to add that I haven't seen the script myself. But if Choccster thinks it's good, I believe him. He is the scriptwriting expert.

Well I'm no expert but I really liked it. It was like reading the book again.
