I Love You, Man- funny movie
Julie & Julia- the quote from DNA at the beginning was the only thing that made me like it.

Right now seeing 'Beautiful life', a great Italian comedy on nazi death camps and such. Perhaps not the best subject for comedy, but this one is superb!

"Invictus"

Look! I actually saw a current movie! In the cinema! And it was really quite good.

Sherlock Holmes. Surprisingly good. I'm sure it benefited tremendously from my not having read any Doyle for more than 20 years, but I expected it to be dumbed down a hell of a lot more than it was. No great intrigue or mystery, but quite a decent action flick.

ah, that sounds encouraging. judging from the trailer i thought it would either be good fun or complete bullshit.

Sherlock Holmes

*still daydreams about Robert Downey Jr. shirtless*

IMO though, it's really not the Holmes that i know from the book, but as happo said, it was a decent action flick.

(Also saw An Education at the local art cinema.. Peter Sarsgaard can be my sugar daddy anytime)

Godfather Part I and II. Watched them with the commentary track. Francis Ford Coppola is really interesting.

Like Hapo and Fennie, I also saw Sherlock Holmes earlier this week, and I must say, considering all the medicore reviews, it was much better than I expected. I haven't read any of the original Holmes stories (aside Hound of Baskerville in high school, which I don't remeber very well), so I can't really judge faithful it was or wasn't to source material. But I enjoyed the hell out of it. Downey and Law have a very good chemistry/relationship worked out as Holmes and Watson. If it had been any other two actors, it might not have worked as well.

I also saw Terry Gilliam's Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Its difficult movie to describe. Lets just say that I liked it. Like most Gilliam flicks on the first viewing, I didn't get it, but I still liked it. I'm pleased that Terry has finally figured out how to effectively utilize CGI. The dreamscapes (or whatever they are) look terrific, like Dali paintings come to life. Heath Ledger (in his last role) is very good (as I'm sure you've heard). But Tom Waits manages to steal every scene he's in as Sat....I mean, ahem, Mr. Nick. Good stuff. My complaint is that PookaMom and I had to drive across town to the local "art house" theater to see this thing. I guess Sony doesn't have enough faith in it to give it a proper wide release, which is a shame. See it on the big screen while you can!

I saw it in a non-arthouse theater, thankfully. It was wonderful, and I'll agree I didn't get it either. It got a little confusing, and especially confused me with the Propanda Due/Roberto Calvi introduction of Heath Ledger's character. Then I also didn't get the flute thing either, but I probably just need to rewatch it for that. And I agree with you about Tom Waits.

Possibly the most excruciating remake I have ever seen. My son could have written a more convincing script, and the sight of Cage rescuing his daughter from the wackos whilst dressed in a tacky gorilla costume was quite jaw-dropping.

And yes, searching for his 'missing daughter' made the reason for him being sacrificed a little limp. Rather than using a virgin, the locals said they needed "to sacrifice someone who had some kind of link to the island but hadn't actually lived there". Yeah, that was it.

Frankly, it would have made more sense if they had said they needed "to sacrifice someone who persisted in giving appalling impersonations of James Stewart", in which case I would have gladly stood at the foot of the model, box of matches at the ready.

Imagine the story being re-written by a committee of school children in their breaktime, with the briefing that they must not offend any existing religious groups, especially pagans. A complete waste of time.

The flute had me really confused, too. I'm assuming it's some sort of symbolism. Some folks on imdb think they have it figured out, but I'm not so sure. Someone else thinks its something to do with Mozart. Who knows. Maybe Terry will explain it in the DVD commentary.

Godfather part III, Yes Man, Coraline, Inglorious Basterds, 40-year-old Virgin, Knocked Up, Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. All very entertaining. Coraline was perhaps the best of the bunch, followed by Inglorious Basterds, Willy Wonka and Yes Man.

what surprisingly charming flick. judging from the trailer i would have never guessed this, but it´s rather amazing that such a mainstream movie gets away with telling a such an exclusively male love story. nice move, guys.

Saw Crazy Heart on Saturday. Excellent film! I really hope Jeff Bridges gets the Oscar he's been nominated for. He deserves it. I also watched The Big Lebwoski (again) because I was in the modd (EDIT: Mood. Thats what I meant. ) for more Jeff Bridges.

The Matador

Why the hell couldn't Brosnan act this well when he was James Bond? Is it the moustache? Does he need facial hair to act? Die Another Day was pretty cool, until he shaved.

Metropolis

Thanks to a surprise find two years ago in Buenos Aires it was possible to restore the 1927 masterpiece by Fritz Lang in (almost) all its glory. The premiere of the movie was today in Berlin and Frankfurt, simultaneously shown on the French/German tv channel Arte. Close to 150 minutes of epic awesomeness! The images are still so impressive, even after more than 80 years. Or maybe because they were created that long ago and are still that mindblowing.

The Guardian has more info.

Saw Percy Jackson blah blah blah this past weekend. Enjoyed it enough but it wasn't amazing or anything. My daughter loves the books and she liked it just fine. She was a bit disappointed in the things they changed, but understood their reasoning.

Good popcorn flick.

Just back from seeing Shutter Island. A bit of a let-down but I won't go into details because I don't want to spoil anything. Maybe it was just me, the whole film malarky is subjective anyway

Thoroughly recommended, repeated late tonight on BBC4.

me too. but it would have been interesting to have a german movie dubbed in english, just for the novelty value...

btw, one of the major streets featured in the movie (where the actor lives and the showdown/accident happens, for example) is the one leading up to my first flat here in berlin! the Karl-Marx-Allee (yes, it´s still called that!). it´s also popular as a movie stand-in for moscow...

Buttcrack. It has Mojo Nixon as a preacher. Thankfully short and has more Mojo than I thought there would be in it.

FINALLY saw Inglorious Basterds. Quentin Tarantino so far, hasn't failed to keep me squealing with glee on the continuous blood, gore, and torture.

Alice in Wonderland.

It was alright. It got a bit messy towards the end, and it never really decided if it wanted to be an adaption or a sequel, so it tried to be both. But, it was pretty fun.

"Memento".
again, after like ten years. i don´t have to tell you how remarkable this movie is. i wanted to share it with mr. nell, but i chose the wrong evening: he was dead tired and kept nodding off, which is something you might get away with while watching, say, "Star Wars", but missing even a minute of "Memento" is positively killing off your chances of following the plot.
we might try this again at another time...

"Lesbian Vampire Killers"

Wot bloody fun! Cast includes Scooti from "The Impossible Planet" and the 8th Doctor. Best watched with limited use of brain.

Wot bloody fun! Cast includes Scooti from "The Impossible Planet" and the 8th Doctor. Best watched with limited use of brain.

Well, that title dosn't beat this one from a Danish filmmaker (and to you in the US the title alone is Not Work Safe).

What an oddly entertaining little film. Quirky characters that left me wanting to learn more about their backgrounds. I'm disappointed to discover it wasn't based on a book.
