And did you laugh until your stomach hurt?

If not, I prescribe a dose of Day at the Races followed by some Night at the Opera

There was much laughing until stomach hurting, and both Day at the Races and Night at the Opera are on the cards for the very near future.

"twilight" - after having caved in and read the first two books in greece. i have to say, the movie was easier to stomach, due to the editing out of the whiny thoughts of the "heroine". but the overall lack of plot is still somewhat stunning. i guess i am over puberty after all ...

"District 9"

very interesting movie, disturbingly close to reality, great performance by lead actor Sharlto Copley

Bull Durham on TV, not bad.

Tim Robbins really needed a better haircut though.

dang i want to see that one. but as usual, i lack fellow geeks to go. and i hate going to the movies on my own.
mr. nell can usually be talked into anything because he loves me, but i don´t want to abuse my power. i´ve already put him through "twilight", so i promised the next thing we´d go see would be something remotely grounded in or reality, without people flying or exploding.

Phil the Alien.

That was one insane, but hilarious ride. Aliens, super-intelligent beavers, Christian Rock, Niagara Falls, and whores. This movie has it all.

Panic Room on TNT. Okay film, rubbish ending. Forest Whitaker was the best bit.

Four movies on my flight from London to Seattle:

The Proposal (enjoyable chick flick)
Star Trek (better than I thought)
Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian (ok sequel)
Angels and Demons (liked it more than the book)

Three movies on my flight from Seattle to London:

Vicky Cristina Barcelona (hmmm)
Hangover (hilarious)
Is Anybody There? (with the Genius That Is Michael Caine)

overall nice stuff to help me through the long hours

That was showing in the iMax at the Smithsonian A&S when I was there - didn't go myself but those coming out thought it was awesome.

"x-men origins: wolverine". it was good, but not as good as i hoped. the script felt too rushed, too cluttered, both with plot and characters. i feel it would have been a better move to leave out all the good/innocent mutant characters since they didn´t get to make a big impact anyway.

"Pandorum". go watch it, if you can. it is quite different than you might think, has some very surprising plot twists and a killer of an ending.

District 9, I just bit the bullet and went to see it myself. I enjoyed it; maybe a touch, touch overhyped, but Sharlto Copley was exceptional.

Would've been very, very interesting to see what people had thought of it if it'd come out in the early 90s.

Pixars Up in 3D. The 3D really makes you appreciate how beautiful the movie actually looks.

All in all, I think, and I realise that I also said this about Wall-E, Up might be Pixars finest movie.

Paranormal Activity. I can understand why the movie's doing so well. The format is exceptional. The home-camera thing is great. Orders of magnitude better than Blair Witch.

The story and development, however, is meh. There is suspense and the ending is admittedly spooky, but the movie suffers from pacing through much of it.

I don't think this is "the future of filmmaking" or anything like that (though I'm sure there will be a slew of imitators), but when done right, this kind of personal feel is very compelling.

"Aliens", Special Edition, on DVD.

man, that ripley sure kicks some serious butt.
Image

saw this movie ages ago, but was too taken with the first part to truly acknowledge it. but this is really a first-class action flick, back in the good old days when the producers actually cared about giving their characters dialogue and personality.
and ripley remains the single most amazing female action hero of all times.

Do you know why? Because she was written as a man. Well, it is noted in the script that "The crew is unisex and all parts are interchangeable for men or women", but the Ripley character is named "Martin Roby".

That doesn't change that she is the butt-kickingest female action hero in any movie, of course. This is just me seeing an opportunity to flaunt my useless knowledge.

oh, i knew that. also, that originally the captain (dallas) was supposed to be the hero - how´s that for MY useless knowledge?
but that was the concept for the first part. the second part is another story entirely, and is essential in bringing out the fact that ripley is, in fact, a female character.

sarah connor isn´t bad either, btw.

but that´s about it! isn´t that strange?
(first one to mention lara croft gets an elephant dropped on their head!)

Summer Glau appears to be the deadliest bad ass out there:

Firefly got cancelled

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles got cancelled

Dollhouse got cancelled

The Fatal Curse of Summer...

my point is, nowadays there are a LOT of super-badass, mega dolled-up action chicks with perfectly tuned bodies running around, fighting uber-choreographed fights.

what makes ripley (and sarah connor) stand out is the fact that they start out as perfectly ordinary women, nothing special about them; attractive looks, but also nothing extraordinary. they survive their adventures mostly by displaying inner strength, determination and courage, and they manage to do this without a host of invisible make-up artists and costume designers standing by.

and this even the summer glau hasn´t managed, delightful as she may be.

Away We Go

This might just be a movie for those that have been through having a kid, though. But bits I'm sure speak to everyone...or at least everyone who has a kid. I really hope Maya Rudolph gets considerably more roles as she was amazing in this.
