This is the title of the book that will accompany the TV series that Stephen Fry and Mark Carwardine are making to follow up the original radio series. The book rights have been purchased by HarperCollins and the book listed for publication in October 2009, and the TV series should go out at the same time.

2009 - A year to look forward to:
Last Chance to See - followup TV series and book
Dirk Gently third radio series
Sixth Hitchhiker book

Perhaps the new book can lead to the old radio series being issued on CD? One can hope!

Don't think the Radio series has ever been issued apart from the couple of bits on DNA@BBC.
Maybe thinking of the Audio book or the Interactive Multimedia thingy?

The BBC have set up a Last Chance to See website and there is an episode of the original radio series available at http://www.bbc.co.uk/lastchancetosee/si ... eral.shtml

They also have what they are calling the pilot episode, which was a ten minute programme that Douglas made after the trip to Madagascar to see the Aye-Aye http://www.bbc.co.uk/lastchancetosee/si ... _aye.shtml

Hopefully the other episode will appear in due course.

There is a whole bunch of other stuff as well to explore from the main page

Also... (a chance to redeem myself as an observer...) there is an Mp3 available of Last Chance to See up for sale on ebay right now, if you feel OK about buying such things... couldn't copy the link cause it wouldn't let me for some reason, but when you go to Ebay and type in Douglas Adams it is (at 1:05 MST, 10/22) about the middle of the second page...

Thanks, DaveH! I'd only up-til-now heard the Fruit Bat episode that was part of the 25th anniversary program and the excerpts that were on the BBC CD's. Fantastic to hear another complete episode of this (IMHO) lost gem.

OK, I'm going to try to clarify things, then I promise to stop posting to this thread, although I will breathlessly wait a reply....

Is this correct?

1) First there was a BBC radio show of Last Chance to See, that was an actual recording of the adventures of Mark and Douglas, which was broadcast, with big gobs of Peter Jones doing some narration and "on the scene" recordings.

2) Then there was the book, Last Chance to See, published in the UK then the US.

3) Then there was the audio book of the book, read by Douglas, which was an abridged version of the book (and apparently on the Mp3 that I referred to above)

4) Then, could somebody tell me what this CD I have is? This is where I'm getting confused. I have a Last Chance to See CD-ROM that I haven't been able to look at for 5 years because it only runs on Windows and I haven't had a Windows (in this case, Windows '95) machine for a while... it showed pictures from the trips, and had some narration and I THINK included several sections of the radio show, if not all... I don't even know anyone running Windows 95, so I can't figure this out myself...

Help! It's like archeology!

Janette (the confused one)

Janette this should work.

Load the CD rom, find the startup program on it, right click on the icon, right down at the bottom of the little popup window that appears there is an option, properties, click on that, now you should have some tabs at the top of a little window to choose from, one of which is called compatability.

Click the box and select run in windows95 mode, then it should work.

Jeanette,

Your time-line is basically correct, except for one point.

The Audio-book is actually FROM the CD-ROM, believe it or not.

The CD-ROM was made in the mid-90's by the Voyager company, who created multi-media CD-ROMs around the time that CD-ROM drives were becoming popular on computers. Last Chance was the book translated to CD-ROM, with radio show clips, photos of the animals and Douglas reading the complete book. Like all the other versions of Last Chance to See it was only a modest success.

The company is long out of business, so the CD-ROM is tough to find these days.

The radio series (with Peter Jones narrating!) has only been broadcast a handful of times, but never issued for sale.

I believe the book is now back in print in anticipation of the television series.

This wikipedia article has all the details:

The audibook was in the then fashionable double cassette format which is why not all the chapters of the book are included. Most MP3s you see of LCtS are the audiobook, and some include the extra chapters ripped from the CDROM. The radio series would only be six parts.

If you want to be confused further my understanding of the history of LCtS is documented in an article I wrote for MH105 back in the early summer of 2007. It is reproduced on a blog about the animals of Last Chance to See at http://www.anotherchancetosee.com/2007/ ... david.html

I have heard most of the radio series - mainly by going along to the National Sound Archive at the British Museum to hear their recordings, which I have to admit is a little extreme.

I just remembered I have the CD rom on Mac format. Never tried it as I guess it is "classic" and might not work on OSX

Fekking BBC changed the new LCTS website and now I can't watch the videos because I'm accessing from outside the UK. And I was so looking forward to the Madagascar stuff...

I tried a couple but so far the BBC website refuses to cooperate. I'll try DaveProxy this evening, thanks for the hint!

Tried DaveProxy, no luck. It doesn't give me the "Not Available in Your Area" error, just a "This doesn't seem to be working at this time" error. Who codes these things, Sirius Cybernetics?

If anyone comes across a proxy that actually works at the BBC site, please post it here. I've tried a few with absolutely no luck. I have the LCTS book and the CD-Rom but have never heard the radio series before and was looking forward to it.

There's been a lot of Douglas related disappointment recently with the Salmon of Doubt and this.

C'mon, Tony, back in 1987, when the choice was normally between Carling Black Label and Watney's Red Barrel, Carlsberg was the height of sophistication. It may even have been brewed in Denmark then.

By the way, there were two guys beside us in a bar in Little Rock drinking Newcastle Brown...

OK guys! I need those original radio-programmes! I've been hunting after them for ages (wrote to lots of libraries to get them to order from BBC, but they all gave me the "unable" garbarge )

So anybody know how to work around the "Not available in your area" or maybe got a "backdoor-link"? :)

Cheers
