Let's have a thread about Football

So, in a very strange circumstance Chelsea were lierally knocked out this weekend.

It is unusal in Football to lose a goalkeeper to injury during the game, it does happen but not very often, however on Saturday Chelsea lost their number one goalkeeper (and one of the best in the world) in the first minute of the game.

In fact he was so badly injured he was knocked unconscious and had to have surgery to his skull and will be out of the game for at least 6 months.

Then in the closing moments of the game his replacement was also knocked unconscious and will also be unable to play for a few weeks.

A very unusal circumstance indeed, and then in a yet another unusal move another manager has offered to lend Chelsea one of their goalkeepers.

Who says there isn't a sporting spirit left? I don't support either of these teams, but feel it was very unfortunate to lose 2 'keepers like that, and very sporting of Sam Allardyce, if the FA will allow it.

Alright different games different risks, now don't you think that was very sporting of the manager to offer one of his goalkeepers, I certainly did.

Alright, whilst watching a real man's game of course, none of this poofy padding and having different teams come on for offense and defense and then switching back and stuff.

Face it Rugby is the shit. Gentlemen playing for reals, not padded out and changing every 50 seconds as said previously.

Although I do enjoy watching American Football, give me a rugby match and I will enjoy it tenfold.

Yes Iain, I think it is a wonderful representation of what is right with sports these days. It is a nice change from the whole 31 college football players being banned for beating each other up.

First Manager to bite the dust, and after only 12 games, poor Iain.

I must say I think this is a bit strange, OK the team is not doing well (someone has to be bottom of the league) but you have to give a manager a chance to build something and twelve games is just not enough.

yeah I was very surprised to hear about that too. As for the Chelsea goalie thing, it was a nice gesture of Big Sam but really I didn't feel sorry for them at all, they had a third goalkeeper. That's why you have them. In case your other two goalies are unable to play. If van der Saar and Kuszczak got injured that would be horrible but making a huge fuss about it wouldn't help, we'd just have to either recall Foster or Howard. Maybe if we couldn't do that we'd need to consider getting another goalie in on loan. Or erm play Thomas Heaton from the reserve team. That's why you have so many options. In case something should happen to your first-choice goalie. They have Hilario. If they didn't think he was good enough then why would they sign him? I feel Chelsea made a huge fuss out of nothing. Goalkeepers have far more protection now than in the old days. Maybe they'd like to borrow some padding from the American 'football' players

Roeder manager of Newcastle and Allardyce of Bolton join the departed. It's a tough job being a manager of a Premiership Football club....

How long can Stuart Pierce of Manchester City hold on is anybody's guess, and David Moyes almost was ejected when Everton had a bad run mid-season.

But the good news is Man Utd are champions, and Chelsea who were vying for four trophies are reduced to one possible win (hehe), although I respect Mourinho as a great manager it's nice to see the cocky git getting a bashing.

Yes, football bosses have a thankless task, shame about Roeder and Allardyce. It's no wonder they get involved in dodgy dealings, when their job security is worse than an Iraqi police recruit...

Whilst I have no conflicting sympathies either way between Chelsea and United, I rather hoped one of them would pick up the treble (or even the magic 4 in Chelsea's case)...just because it could have been a great inspiration for the game...and those just becoming involved in it.

Pearce Gone

Jewell gone

So that's eight out of twenty so far for one season.

But what will be interesting is that Roy Keane arrives.

So the question is which club will Sven opt for?

That sounds like a good deal for Barca; Henry in full flight is a majestic sight.

I rather like Henry; notwithstanding his mad skillz, for the most part he always seems so...so chill about everything when he plays.

I also am rather frightened at the thought of him + Ronaldinho next year.

Premiership Blair Years

Manchester United won 245 Premiership matches in the Blair era

Charlton Athletic had a goal difference of exactly –100 in the Blair era

Aston Villa scored and conceded 461 goals when Blair was Prime Minister

Only three of the 40 Premiership clubs never played in the top-flight when Blair was in charge, Oldham, QPR and Swindon Town

Nottingham Forest gained the fewest points in the Blair era, just 31 from 40 games

Of the Big Four, Chelsea conceded the fewest goals in the Blair era, just 320

West Ham gained four points more than Spurs in London derbies during Blair’s era of power

Bradford City played in the Premiership in the Blair era but will start the Gordon Brown epoch in League Two

Wigan and Fulham both celebrated promotion from what is now League Two two days after Blair was elected in May 1997. Both are now established Premiership sides

Only three teams won the Premiership while Tony Blair led the country, Manchester United (six times), Arsenal (three times) and Chelsea (twice)

Thierry Henry scored 20 or more goals in five successive seasons in the Blair era but now both have departed the English political/footballing scene

Henry was the top scoring player in the Blair era with 174 goals

Celtic’s impressive UEFA Cup away win at Liverpool in the UEFA Cup came on March 20, 2003, the day that on Blair’s orders Britain invaded Iraq along with the USA and two other countries

West Ham scored five goals in the Premiership for the first time just two days after Blair was elected in 1997

The only Premiership managers to be in charge of their clubs during the entire Blair era are Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger

Of the teams in the Premiership when Blair came to power, Nottingham Forest and Leeds now languish in League One while Wimbledon have moved to Milton Keynes and are in League Two

Sunderland were relegated from the Premiership just weeks after Blair arrived and as he departs office are back in the top-flight

Manchester United lost 19 home games while Tony Blair was Prime Minister, with Arsenal, Bolton, Liverpool and Middlesbrough all winning at Old Trafford three times each

Two teams scored eight goals in a single Premiership game under Blair, Manchester United away at Nottingham Forest in February 1999 and Blair’s own team Newcastle at home to Sheffield Wednesday in September 1999

The Premiership starts again today, I'm looking forward to a good season, it will probably be between Man Utd. and Chelsea again this year with Liverpool and Arsenal following close behind, but I think this year's dark horse will be Roy Keane's Sunderland, we'll have to wait and see of course but it's looking like a good season ahead.

Well there is but I don't have much time for that myself, plus whenever I did try you are forced to to take just one player from each team in your own team which is ridiculous, anybody who follows the game would want the on form half of Man Utd the on form half of Chelsea with a smattering of Arsenal and Liverpool, and the occasional up and coming player from another club.

Jose Mourihno has sensationally left Chelsea, this is a big surprise.

He hadn't been getting on well with the owner, but he will be a hard act to follow.

I lolled excessively when I found out.

I am deeply hesitant to make predictions since the only games I can make the effort to watch are the ones where Liverpool's playing. If I were to watch all the games, I'd probably have to fiddle around with online streaming video things all the time, which I really don't want to as it's a total pain (the only channel they air Premier League games on over here is Fox Soccer Channel, which I don't have).
I'll admit I'm a bit biased as I support them, but I genuinely think Liverpool have a good shot at the title this year; with Voronin and especially Torres, we pretty much have all the ingredients in place. The only problem is a rather worrying lack of focus we can sometimes have. And speaking of which, Porto? Don't talk to me about Porto...
Fingers crossed for the game tomorrow, hope we can get over that and do well. Actually, the 'pool will hopefully win, not draw again, because we'll need all the points we can get.*
Am I delusional? Probably a little, I know.

*I know, I know, it's the revolutionary advice everyone gives: We need to win all our games by large margins, if we can just do that, we should be at the top...

Yes Liverpool have a good chance but honestly any of the top 4 (Liverpool Arsenal Chelsea Man Utd), can win it. Man Utd had a bad start but Mourinho's departure I think will seriously mess up the team both in strategy and team spirit.

Looks like he's leaving England altogether which is a bit of a shame for the Premiership because he was a special one no doubt about it.

Well, I'm sure glad we paid all that money for Torres to sit on the bench...clearly it's doing us a lot of good.

I think the team to beat this year is probably Man U; I agree about Chelsea being thrown off with Mourinho's departure.
He was certainly very entertaining, I'll almost miss him. Almost. ;-)

At this point I think I just feel sorry for Derby.

On the one hand, it makes up for the Chelsea game, and 3 points! OTOH, it was pretty much just madness and luck on our side in the second half, as opposed to...y'know...playing incredibly well.

Also, wow, Arsenal's still pretty much winning every game.

Those jerks with their playing skills and whatnot.

Oh well here we go again.

After Jose Mourihno's shock departure from Chelsea,

Sammy Lee was sacked from Bolton last week.

And now Martin Jol has been sacked by Spurs

It really is a tough job being a Premiership manager.
