I downloaded Utopia and The Sound of Drums - I thought the Master's rebirth would be an ideal time to start downloading episodes on a bit more regular basis. And it proved to be! Both of them were excellent episodes - but only because of the Masters, I'm afraid. Jacobi and Simm both kick ass. Especially Simm - that scene on the Valiant was awesome. And Voodoo Child - well, it seemed really out of context, but I loved it anyway.

Another coincidence is that tomorrow's my birthday as well...

One thing that hasn't really been explained is...

The last time we saw the Master (the 1996 TV movie with Paul McGann as the Doctor and Eric Roberts as the Master), the Master had been sucked into the Eye of Harmony in the TARDIS. How in the hell did he get out of that one?

well: if i understood correctly, the master claims that the time lords revived him so that he could fight for them in the time war (and what a great idea this turned out to be we know). which is the only possible solution anyway, since i figure the time lords would be the only ones who do anything like it AND at least doesn´t contradict the TVM (which had a problem anyway because there the eye of harmony seems to be located inside the tardis ... which it actually isn´t and never was, as far as i know).

a question i´m asking myself: in the TVM, wasn´t he down to his last regeneration and tried to hijack the doctor´s body so that he could get extra lifes? so how can he regenerate now?

That's the great thing about Time And Relative Dimension In Space, you can make it up as you go along, or sideways or backwards or whenwhereever.

To quote the Runaway Bride: "So you make it all up as you go along?"
The Doctor: "Yes, but I'm brilliant at it!"

Honestly, the whole canon thing is way too serious for me. Have fun with the speculating, 'though! I assume the Master got help from Jeannie and Pan Tau to get out of the Eye of Harmony. Their blatant goodness was always suspicious to me...

i´m still not sure if i got this right, but judging from the reaction of the doctor, he knows the "toclafane" only as time-tot bogeymen, they are not a real alien race that he knows of, right?
i´ve also established that the master really had no idea how the time war ended but that he ran long before the showdown. which pretty much rules out any connection of time lords and the toclafane plan.

I really wanted the Toclafane to be Time Lord related but I think you're
right, Nell. The Master not knowing the fate of Gallifrey and the Doctor
not recognizing them sort of rules that out. Not enslaved Time Lords or
their Tardis', then what?

6 Billion has to be a clue. That and the sight of them coming from what
looks like a massive rift in the fabric of reality. And didn't the Master say
that if the Doc knew what they really were it'd break his hearts? Hrmm.

Seems to me we need to look at the notion of an alternate Earth, maybe.
The "Paradox" Machine might suggest that's what we're dealing with, also.

What if they're the inhabitants of the Earth Rose was trapped on? Were
there 6 Billion humans there? Could the Cybermen or Daleks have converted
them all into tiny little killing machines the master was able to enslave?

Help me out with the logistics as my memory on last years finale is a tad
fuzzy. Swiss cheese for brain matter, as you know.

The Toclafane might be flying killing machines piloted by tiny creatures all looking like Rose.

Yes good one Ken , plus didn't the Master say something like "Off you go children" as the rip appeared, maybe some clue there.

i also think the 6 billion must be a clue. but actually, more questions rear their ugly head:
if the number is significant, what is the aim?
is it some gelth-like plot - use the earth human bodies as hosts? then why decimate them? ruled out.
are they the inhabitants of parallel dimension earth? a distinct possibility - the metal spheres could be vessels to cross the void (never mind the size). but if they plan to take over new earth - why stop at a tenth of its population?

it all boils down to "what do the toclafane and the master want?"
until now it looks as if the toclafane are very much dependent on the master and looking to him for survival. for this, they are willing to do his every bidding. in exchange i guess they offer him something that goes beyond the earth. maybe they have sworn to serve him as an army, to help him conquer whatever he wants. hey, wouldn´t it be funny if he´s hoped to conquer gallifrey with their help - only to discover it´s gone? but naw, he was in too good a mood for this. to me, looks like everything´s working just fine for him.

you know, i still think there needs to be a utopia-connection. i still think the call to utopia was some sort of elaborate trap for mankind.
clues?
- the massive call gets a lot of coverage in the episode - that´s a big set-up to throw away
- the end of all times is near = "the approaching darkness" the toclafane fear?
- the master aka prof yana is helping mankind to reach utopia - gotta be more than a coincidence - the drums as instructions of his subconscience?
- as far as i can tell we have no clue a) how many were on board of the utopia ship; b) what happened once they reached their destination - maybe they had eons to prosper and reach 6 billion again or other humans reached utopia on different ways - resourceful, remember? -> so we could look at 6 billion utopians. maybe the link to our earth was predetermined and they waited until they had the 6 billion equal to our population

i also think the master isn´t completely master of what he´s doing, he´s driven, maybe even manipulated (the drumming).

sooo... maybe it IS a time lord scheme after all. he´s being used without his knowledge. they are a shifty bunch. i also think it´s very cool that they put their fate into the hands of their two prodigal sons - one to save the day (maybe even to sacrifice himself - nobody has said that he was supposed to survive at all), the other as a backdoor, so to speak.

omg. another speculation rant. i´m sorry, i´m so sorry.
the sad thing is i could go on. no really, this storyline has me mesmerized, i hope the solution will live up to my expectations!
oh, and i also hope the doctor gets turned back asap.

I think the Toclafane are after a well-known triangular chocolate bar. Since it's a well-known fact that if all the bars sold each year were placed end to end they would measure the same as the earth's circumference, they will attempt to use them to imprison the whole world's population.

I hate product placement like this.

More ideas, mobile 'phones could have something lot to do with it , the sattelites and all that, and toclafane isn't so far away from telephone.

The drum beat, isn't it the Doctor Who theme?

du du du du,
du du du du,
du du du du,
du
du du du du,

Not that that would have anything to with the story but if it is based on the theme it's a nice touch.

from the start, i have associated the drum beat with the double heart beat of timelords ... another clue? but if it is, why have neither the doctor nor the master alluded to it? on the other hand, it might be too obvious for them to notice - or to obvious to point it out. ("btw master, this drumming - have you noticed that it´s the exact rhythm of a double heart beat?" - " yes, doctor, thank you, i have, since i´ve heard it all my life!!!")

the site for the upcoming ep is up!
since i´ve checked out the gallery and the trailer a bit more, i´m pretty sure the new ep will start with a serious time gap: i´m guessing that the master has had everything his way for at least some months, maybe even longer.

small spoilers, mainly rooted in the gallery pictures
[spoil]we can see martha´s family dressed like servants and jack chained down, looking rather the worse for the wear - so i assume the master is having fun with them, humiliating martha´s family and maybe making good his threat to kill jack over and over again. and the doctor has to witness all this, helpless. which is all rather dreadful... *shudders* martha, on the other hand, seems to have been busy building up/joining forces with some kind of resistance group and preparing some daring raid on the "vailiant". does anybody else think the doctor has given her his sonic screwdriver (at least for savekeeping) before she left? no point in keeping it, they would have taken it from him.[/spoil]

I thought the same thing, Iain.

Does anyone else do the drumming? Just for shits & giggles?

Finally got back from my break in Scotland.
I can remember just enough from last Saturday to say how incredibily exciting/tense/hilarious/shocking it was!
This is the only finale that I really want to happen, because it's just so exhilarating, even if it does mean the end of the series...

yeah, i think you´re absolutely right! with the other finales, okay, they were gripping, they were heart-breaking, and of course you wanted to know how they´d get out of this mess - but this is the most mysterious, and there are so many revelations to be expected. a tiny voice inside my head is worried if any conclusion could live up to this huge built-up - but so far, i haven´t been disappointed and i have every faith.

btw, watched POTW last night, for the first time after more than a year i think, and it was still great. took me back quite a bit. i´ve been so imersed by tennant´s doctor that i had just about forgotten the moody and manic fascination of Nine, not too mention the bodily threat he was able to display. he´s really given us the part of a war survivor who´s scarred but still has faith. just for the record. i think i´ll have to watch the first series once again, to give credit where credit´s due (also to rose, btw - so far the chemistry between ten and martha is nothing like nine/ten-rose, but i´m willing to see where they take us).
oh, and "i think you need a doctor" is still a *thud*-moment. just great.

back to the current drama ... (glad to have you back on board, sep! another who girl to hide with behind the sofa!)

ah, you really think so? interesting. i´m pretty neutral on this subject, no shipping involved on either pairing (swear to god), but i thought the writers haven´t given us much fodder on martha yet. i think as a character she suffers from the fact that her relationship with the doctor is loaded with the one-sided love story from the start. so far, not much develoment on this front. plus, martha hasn´t displayed a single weakness yet (she´s even flawlessly gorgeous), so it´s a bit difficult to get a grip on her. and the doctor hasn´t turned much of his attention to her yet, so we haven´t had much interaction here.
things have become more interesting since TSOD, when she no longer blindly follows his lead. so i´m interested to see where this leads us. but really, having seen TPOTW just now, it felt as if there was much more happening on screen between doctor and companion, with a real common history and character development.

I just find her a more intelligent character than I did Rose. After a point, Rose just stopped growing and became stale. She just began mooning after the Doctor and I really detested that the series took that course. It made her one-dimensional.

Martha, on the other hand, is developing. She has a future (as a doctor), she's intelligent and she's quite capable of holding her own. Whereas with Rose, she showed some intelligence and ability to think on her feet but she wasn't really going to be much more than just a future housewife, a "fish & chips", "beans on toast" doe-eyed consumer. Sure, she traveled and experienced and everything but, at the end, she was still the same person. In essence, her future was to become yet another Jackie Tyler.

I agree with Gonz there, Rose was a bit too Eastenders, and I think there's lots of potential for Martha, My Dear.
