I don't want to get my hopes up about a movie version! Of the two logos, I prefer the first - still, a different design could work too. I guess I'm really open to the logo... It's the screenplay that I'm most worried about! Those books have a very non-linear way about them, which is why they rock. Good luck.

Richard E. Grant as Zaphod sounds pretty cool to me. He was great in Hudson Hawk. Man, that movie is so great. Why can't everyone realize that? (Sorry, but whenever I get a chance to rant about the underratedness of that movie, I take it.)

AJ,

Yes, Hudson Hawk is underrated. So is Last Action Hero. So flame away.

Michael,

It is your movie after all, but we all want this one to be an improvement and I have a feeling in my gut Grant will work much better as Zarniwoop and you need a cool looking California guy to play the big Z.

Sorry. I disagree with that entirely! I think Richard E Grant would be great as Z.B.

I though the first choice for the first movie, Robert Downey jr. was superb.

Superb, yes, Dukey, but too damn unreliable.

If the dude was sober, I'd trust him to play absolutely anything, but unfortunately in the past twelve years, I've rarely heard he was sober.

(And of course, there's the pretty much obvious choice of Mark Wing-Davey as Zaphod IV.)

Is logo 1, the same as logo 2, but at an angle...?

Actually, I've just realised that the main problem (for me) with the second logo is how the 'a' and the 'e' in 'at the end of the' touch the two horizontal stripes that separate the words 'Restaurant' and 'Universe'. There should be a slight gap between the letters and the stripes.

I agree. I dont want to sound negative, but the logo-designs look a bit amateurish. Hopefully they are not finished products yet. I also like number one better. The colours are nicer, and the 3D-look is better.

I also agree with Thrithwaite, that the designs look axactly the same, with a bit different colours and an angle.

About the actors, I have to say that I have always thought that Max Quordlepleen is Eric Idle. He probably wont be awailable (or affordable) but there might be a chance that he would like the project eneough to participate. He even wrote a scifi-novel that possibly have some influences by Douglas.

I had to look from IMDB, who Richard E. Grant is... but yes, he could make a good Zaphod! Just didnt remember his name.

Logo 1 reminds me of the titles from the TV series, which was my first exposure to Douglas Adams, and is therefore my choice.

Stephen is our first and only choice for the Guide. He did a superlative job in the first film.

Guys, thought we would give you some background on some of the creative choices we have had to make, and how things developed from that.

One of my favourite sequences/scenes from HitchHikers is the Frogstar Prison Officer as heard in Episode 8 of the radio series. He introduces himself to Zaphod, offers him a steak and bottle of wine, and then has the fire hoses turned on him in order to 'soften him up.'

We realised though that this sequence isn't in the book in any shape or form, nor is the Body Debit sequence. Could we use both of them? Should we?

We decided that even though the Frogstar Officer skit wasn't in the book, it would be criminal to not at least include it. We decided though that the Body Debit sequence was a prime opportunity for a 'Clean Lift' and did not move the plot or narrative along in any vital way, so we excised it.

Concept designs for the Frogstar Guard were created (appearing here before the weekend for your appraisal and general backbiting and recrimination) and incorporated into the Storyboard sequence.

Knowing what material to include for the Film Synopsis is absolutely vital. Hopefully we will have made the right choices. What we can promise is that we have no intention of cutting any jokes 'in half'...

Michael.

including the frogstar "torture" sounds good to me - i always loved the scene for the sheer absurdity. also, it´s a great contrast between zaphod´s cool (but entirely misplaced) attitude, roostah´s (sp?) warnings and the cheerful malice of the frogstar relations officer. a wonderfully typical scene for DNA´s humour.

i wouldn´t say "no" to the body debit scene - also a great idea. plus the arrival in the robot disco would be nice to see in a movie. but it´s certainly not vital.

methinks, though, that you should tread carefully when it comes to cutting scenes because they "don´t move the plot along". plot isn´t the most important thing in h2g2, and trying to put too much emphasis on it might lead you up the wrong path. until now, i´ve yet to meet a h2g2 fan who´s bothered by the lack of both plot and logic in DNA´s work. just my 2 euro-cents, of course.

Thanks, Nell, you've just uncovered something else the original team did wrong: They forgot there was no plot to speak of anyway and cut stuff out for plot purposes. Don't make the same mistake, Michael.

I'd also tread carefully in asking for fans' opinions. You have to make them happy all right but you have to remember, it's your movie too. But then again, you are a fan too, aren't you?

I'd say no to the Body Debit scene, but a big hearty yes to the Frogstar Guard fellow.

Yes definitely if you want good honest feedback this is the place to be. The opinions on details will vary a lot but I think everyone is more or less in agreement that being faithful to the source material and delivering those maybe well know but much loved bits of wisdom and humour will be more appreciated than another pathetic romp around the galaxy.

Certainly for me Hitchhicker was never a linear thing the guide gave the opportunity to set up a situation and deliver a bunch of jokes/funny observations about it, with of course relevance to the pitiful daily struggles we put ourselves through in the name of commerce/modern existence.

So for me anyway, as long as more attention is payed to the spirit of the humour and less to the cosmetics of making it snazzy for a young audience, then it certainly couldn't fail to be better than the first attempt and would be most welcome chez moi.

Making it snazzy for a young audience, Iain, I think you uncovered why there was no real feel to the first film!

That said, I don't understand why they felt they had to do that, as I first discovered Hitchhiker after seeing a copy of the first book in my aunt's bedroom when I was twelve or thirteen. But in all fairness, I told other sixth graders of the brilliance of the story and in thirty seconds most of them scratched their heads.

Disney, personally that's the big problem for me.

Over the years Disney has learned that you can make more from a movie franchise by selling plastic figures and pencils and logo infested T shirts etc. and spin off things than by selling a 10 dollar movie ticket. So basically any Movie rights they get their hands on they want to be sure that a good line of cuddly toys, plastic figures etc can be generated.

Especially with all their theme parks and so on, A movie has to generate a new ride somewhere and a whole bunch of stuff or else it just doesn't fit with the plan.

The Theatre life of a film is short these days, maybe a couple of months or so except in exceptional circumstances but then comes the DVD and then it's on pay TV , network TV and then repeated for ever on the movie channels, and that's all publicity for the plastic dolls, which used to be publicity for the movies.

And that's one of the other reasons I dislike what's happening in Hollywood these days, because they have become Toytown instead of Tinseltown.

That I am convinced was the whole point of the knitted doll sequence in the first film, it was purely a ploy to sell cheap dolls of the characters, and in fact I wouldn't be surprised if the roles were cast with the dolls in mind.

How about this symplistic yet stylish design mixed with the neon sign-idea? Like, one of the letters slightly flickering to suggest that this is actually a neon sign and consequently, this could be used as the banner of the Resaurant itself.

now this is a great idea! can see it right in front of me (this works just for an animated version, of course): the logo appears, bit wobbly, as if we are approaching it on foot and it´s our viewpoint. one of the letters keeps flickering - and the banjo begins playing in the background, y´know, just the first few notes. when the song really picks up, the letter (and the rest of the sign) explode in a shower of sparks, shortly we see "the second part of 'the hitchhiker´s guide to the galaxy'!" and then on to whatever comes next.

Well, it'll give us something to work on on the train to Cambridge in June...

Anyhow, if RTD can get his hands dirty with Who, can't we at least help with H2G2 v2

This discussion is great, but as Nell says: Don't let us down y'hear...

They are both rather simplistic. I like the colours on the first one better but the second one is a lot clearer. I don't know. Some of the forum-reader submissions are nicer.

Thanks for pointing me to the forums, Dukey. I won't be leaving afda any time soon but I'll drop by once in a while when I desire more traffic. :)

Many thanks to all of you that voted for the Pitch Portfolio Logo. We are glad that it's the first one, as we feel it combines the elements from the original film and other 'worlds'. The final design will be animated, accompanied by the classic Journey Of The Sorcerer music from the film. We'll preview it here...

Thanks again for all who contributed. Back to the digital grindstone...

Michael.

On the other hand, scenes in books that make a fantastic movie scene in our head don't often come over easy on actual film. And also, it's difficult to put your finger on the spot where this is happening. You just go "Oh, that scene felt sort of pressed, stressed and strained, they shold have shortened it", when in fact it could be a scene straight off the original.

As with any movie based on a novel, the better movie is always the one you made in your head.

How do I put together a professional portfolio to show for a Graphic Design job? I have a bunch of works, but not really sure how to organize it professionally. I'm talking about a portfolio to show and discuss during an interview. What are some stores that might carry things that I can put it together? What are some ideas of how to present it in a professional manner? Any advice, tips, or websites will help.
