Ok, this is an official audition for the parts of Porter1 and Porter2.

We welcome auditions of the individuals parts, or a joint auditions of both parts (either by doing both voices yourself or by doing the parts with someone else). The porter's dont have to be male, nor do they have to be english.

The scene is small enough to post here:

[quote]Scene 3b

Porter2: Here’s some coffee for you, Bill. Getting a bit colder tonight.

Porter1(Bill): I think it is. You can say what you like about people, they don’t get any less peculiar. Fellow in here just now asking if there was a horse in the college.

Porter2: Oh, yes. I had a chap in here earlier. Sort of strange foreign priest. Couldn’t understand a word he said at first. But he seemed happy just to stand by the fire and listen to the news on the radio.

Porter1(Bill): Foreigners, eh?

Porter2: In the end I told him to shoot off. Standing in front of my fire like that. Suddenly he says is that really what he must do? Shoot off? I said, in my best Bogart voice, “You better believe it, buddy.â€

I think college porters are a very British thing and from experience I think that British would be preferable for these parts. Also I've never came across a female porter... now I'm up for not excluding anybody and giving opportunities to as many people as possible, but I personally think that of all of the possible roles this one is one that would most benefit from a British accent (fake or otherwise.)

I've already sent in my audition for both porters. Do I need to send it in again?

Edit: Sent it in again anyway.

BTW, how are we going to do the impersinations? Should we do them as best we can or all the same like DNA does it on the audiobook?

Okay, its a valid opinion, tho this is a completely open audition so lets see what people can come up with. I admit that an english male voice may be the best, but we dont know that till we get auditions.

About the impersinations... I dont know how douglas adams does them in the audiobook but i would hope for a little 'flair' from a voice actor, amatuer or otherwise. (Personally I can hear a Cagney voice in my head when I read it, but thats just because his voice is so distinctive it comes into my head when I see the word 'Cagney' :???: )

My suggestion on both counts would be to do different versions. Another suggestion i could offer: ask the writer

EDIT: Having had time to read the section and think about it, I think all three impersinations should sound almost, but not quite the same (to me, Cagney-ish). Porter1's remarks are absolutely dripping with dry wit (mixed metaphor by me there  ) tho i feel its not meant to be sharp, hurtful wit - more sort of soft and friendly (Steve Buscemi's character in The Big Lebowski? Except wittier... :???: ). Porter2 seems the more excited, louder and chatty of the two, but also a little less intelligent/friendly. Im definately rambling now...

Agreed about the personalities - thats how I imagined them too.

Sorry to show my ignorance but who is Jimmy Cagney? I just did a random voice because I didnt have a clue what he sounded like, but I could look into it and try a better one

I always though that Porter 2 was genuinely trying to do impressions but that they didnt sound any different than his regualr speaking voice. And that Porter 1 was just messing with him by continuing to say that his "so-called" impressions always sounds like someone other than they are supposed to be.

And I can send in one if still needed. Just let me know.

Ok

We should make a decision soon on this. It seems we have three candidates, WillSax, skutterz and other dude. WillSax, if you want to send in an audition do so. Otherwise I would recommend giving one part to the other dude and one part to skutterz. If people agree with this I can just take these recordings and append them onto the end of the scene I'm currently mixing (Scene 3.)
