Yes, I've seen the prestige. It has good acting, but left me wondering what the point was at the end. I thought it cool that they included a bit of the Tesla/Thomas Edison rivalry, which they never explained, but I knew of anyway, and kept calling Tesla a wizard (though he was a scientist). The water-torture trick was nice to see, as it is a Houdini original, although the dove table thing killing the dove was just a movie thing. Dove tables don't use cages that kill the doves, they have a very small compartment in them constructed in such a way that it is completely invisible from audience view. The ending was pretty obvious, because of the references to loving her on certain days, and not loving her on other days. The three parts to a magic trick thing only applies to vanishes, but there are many more kinds of magic trick:
vanishes, transformations, levitations, mind reading/variation thereof, escapes, etc. The movie was, as I have mentioned before, acted phenomenally, but the plot left a sour taste in my mouth, with all of its unnecessary twists and turns and all of the questions it left unanswered. I am not sure who was in the box at the very last shot, or why the one who was hanged asked the guard if he was watching closely, and said abrakadabra as his last words. The rivalry between the two magicians was anything but professional, and the notion that either of them had any magical skill besides presentation was ridiculous. The illusions they showed in that movie are the kind which only require money to perform, as they are self-working, and once you buy them, they take no actual skill to perform. I would have liked to see some more sleight of hand and maybe some fire magic, to give it that extra emphasis. The movie was well-done, I'll give you that, but The Illusionist was a far better movie with the same atmosphere and similar settings. The Illusionist's ending actually surprised me. I admit is was a good movie from a cinematic viewpoint, but from the viewpoint of a spectator (so to speak), it left me with a sinking feeling that my eight bucks would have been better spent elsewhere.
