I live in southern Arizona, USA. I run a rescue and shelter, along with the general cats, rabbits, and dogs bit, I also shelter unwanted rodents: rats, mice, hamsters, gerbils, degu, guinea pigs, and chinchillas. Even currently, there is a ferret hopping about chasing the rescue kittens through the livingroom and occasionally attacking my foot. I presumably will be fetching the ferret off the ceiling with a broom later.
I am probably one of the usual persons that can say that Douglas Adams saved my sanity.
I had grown up the only child of a perverse single woman. I sincerely believe that her only enjoyment in life was to come home and abuse me. She smiled and delighted in it. My only respite was if I had a book in hand, appeared to be doing homework, or with my grandparents. Her behavior prompted me read the entire contents of the school’s library (as I went there for several years), Fiction and Non-fiction, much to the delight of the Librarian, who never had anyone in there with the exception of scheduled class visits. She even lent me the reference books, and yes, I read encyclopedias.
About the time my seizures started from all the head trauma I endured, I was in middle school. I was wandering through life in a daze, rarely speaking, having pretty much withdrawn into myself. My only friend left was named Amy, one memorable day she handed me a book and told me it would cheer me up. That it did, it was Hitchhiker’s.
But it also sent me off on a mission. My mind was foggy, and there were so many words in that book that I either had never been exposed to since I was American, or perhaps just couldn’t remember if I had. I quickly tired of looking up the same words repeatedly and soon had my own little dictionary. We had a Commodore 64 and I alphabetized the words and definitions as I came across them. By the third reading, the words had sunk in to my mind and I could finally enjoy it for what it was. I came out of the fog.
Many happy memories ensued. My favorite is of my grandparents and I sitting around an already ancient at the time record player (that was also noted for having shortwave and 8-track), listening to the radio series I had “discoveredâ€
