I live in southern Arizona, USA. I run a rescue and shelter, along with the general cats, rabbits, and dogs bit, I also shelter unwanted rodents: rats, mice, hamsters, gerbils, degu, guinea pigs, and chinchillas. Even currently, there is a ferret hopping about chasing the rescue kittens through the livingroom and occasionally attacking my foot. I presumably will be fetching the ferret off the ceiling with a broom later.

I am probably one of the usual persons that can say that Douglas Adams saved my sanity.

I had grown up the only child of a perverse single woman. I sincerely believe that her only enjoyment in life was to come home and abuse me. She smiled and delighted in it. My only respite was if I had a book in hand, appeared to be doing homework, or with my grandparents. Her behavior prompted me read the entire contents of the school’s library (as I went there for several years), Fiction and Non-fiction, much to the delight of the Librarian, who never had anyone in there with the exception of scheduled class visits. She even lent me the reference books, and yes, I read encyclopedias.

About the time my seizures started from all the head trauma I endured, I was in middle school. I was wandering through life in a daze, rarely speaking, having pretty much withdrawn into myself. My only friend left was named Amy, one memorable day she handed me a book and told me it would cheer me up. That it did, it was Hitchhiker’s.

But it also sent me off on a mission. My mind was foggy, and there were so many words in that book that I either had never been exposed to since I was American, or perhaps just couldn’t remember if I had. I quickly tired of looking up the same words repeatedly and soon had my own little dictionary. We had a Commodore 64 and I alphabetized the words and definitions as I came across them. By the third reading, the words had sunk in to my mind and I could finally enjoy it for what it was. I came out of the fog.

Many happy memories ensued. My favorite is of my grandparents and I sitting around an already ancient at the time record player (that was also noted for having shortwave and 8-track), listening to the radio series I had “discoveredâ€

Heya, Annie. Indeed, what a story. Many people have found solace in the works of Douglas Adams. And then, some folks have been utterly baffled by them.

Welcome aboard the DAC. Have a buke...

Superb introduction. Welcome, Annie.

Methinks you will fit in well here.

In the meantime have a piece of vinyl:

I am (more or less)(oh ALL RIGHT, not really, but somewhat) at a loss for words for that intro.

You sound like a great person, welcome to our humble (if somewhat crowded)(and at time insane)(at others completely lucid)(while totally bonkers, of course) community.

I find it great having this place to share my feelings, latest news and indeed latest purchases of books, dvds, music and so on and so forth.

This, then, will be my gift to you: a place to put all of your shiney new gifts:

Share and Enjoy!

/WG

Hello Annie.

How you've remained so positive after a life story like that, I can only wonder. Bless you on behalf of all the animal lovers.

Here's a recent pic of my son Liam, a sensitive lad who's looking a bit worried here about his pet Hammy... Later that day the vet removed a huge growth from Hammy's neck and I'm glad to say so far (touch wood) he's doing fine...

Welcome to the DAC, Annie.

Welcome, Annie. After you've been here awhile you'll start to notice an uncanny resemblance
between this place and the shelter full of rambunctious wildlife that you so admirably run.

They're both full of interesting creatures that poop everywhere.

Good timing, too. Tomorrow afternoon we're adopting a pair of young cats from our own
local shelter and adding them to the family here. Very excited about it.

Welcome Annie. I am vagabond, 44 year-old suburban housewife, Hitchhiker fan, and bird lover.

This image left me speechless:
