I did peruse alt.fan.pratchett but there's nothing new there since January-ish. The rumor then was that Sam Raimi was directing.

I don't know about a dead project, I think Raimi is just tied up with Spider-Man right now, and will be until the Spring. When the P.R. push for Spider-Man 3 starts, we'll probably start hearing stuff like, "What's next for Raimi? An adaptation of Terry Pratchett's The Wee Free Men." (You know, in that annoying Access Hollywood type voiceover)

I think we just heard about it extremely early, and come springtime, things will start rolling along with it.
