Here we are now...

http://s65.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=066A ... CMFVAR5Y7E

Note we currently don't have any announcing, but apart from that it seems reasonably complete.

Also, I'm not sure what was decided for title music, so have just used Something.

I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but the opening scene that is currently in the episode is the joke version where Fleppo and I reversed our roles. Other than that, it's sounding really good.

I was indeed aware of this, however it's the only version I appear to have and decided to include it for completeness, even though it was only temporary. Obviously forgot to mention this above...

Hmm strange... you could just try again shortly. The episode 3 script sent by Waux I couldn't open first of all, but a bit later I could (the yousendit page, that is)

Chelsea: if you could put it up permanently on the Gently website then we can provide a link for it here for people here to access, saving all that yousendit stuff that sometimes may not work (I don't have the space unfortunately :-( damn Oxford only giving us 15 meg.)

The page opened fine for me and I was able do download it in about 90 seconds. Upon intial
sampling it sounds excellent. Will try to listen to it in it's entirety later.

Nice work folks.

One more comment about something that you are probably aware of, but didn't have the lines for. We need Hawkin's lines recorded. (The three Calwey lines that don't make sense.) I believe Skutterz was going to do them.

This entry has been updated by the author to have a definitive list of things he needs to do to the episode after he's recieved:
* Skutterz announcement
* New initila scene from Fleppo

So definate things to change so far:

Initial scene (will require new scene from FLEPPO and UNNO)
Hawkin and announcer lines (will require recordings from SKUTTERZ)
Change the THEME MUSIC
THUNDER sound effects
CAWLEY coleridge line to move
Reduce HISS on the narrator lines - however, I think that, in general, we're not going to be getting perfect quality recordings due to the nature of this thing, and we should just accept this and do the best we can with what we've got rather than letting it drag us.
I have also managed to reduce some of the POPPING in the Susan scene.

Also, I feel that I should add more thunder sound effects when Reg returns to the hall towards the end of the episode. Also, there's a Cawley line that's in the wrong place in this same section, that should be in the background in the first section.

As for the initial scene, I'm pretty sure Fleppo has it done. (At any rate, he has my lines for it.) He just needs to upload it.

Also, are we keeping with that theme music?

If so we should decide on the final announcement for KZ to record. The official cast list is on the website http://www.whis-kers.org/dirkgently/cast.asp and thus needs to be adapted into the final annoucement - Chelsea, could you replace on the list

ChrisB for Christopher Broadbent
SophieP for Sophie Potter
and
CarloT for Carlo Teubner

i.e. their real names please? Apart from this, are the underlined names on the website all ok with everybody?

Sidenote: Some people just have some sooo adorable names. I particularly like Chelsea, Aaron Cumberledge and I simply adore Christopher Broadbent. (Guess why.)

Speaking of names, I've just sent this to KZ:

...
As for announcing, could we have a "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, by Douglas Adams" at the begining and at the end something like (obviously doesn't need to be exact, just this is the cast list for the first episode.

"In that episode of Dirk Gently, John Collin was the narrator, Vincent E.L was Dirk, Aaron Cumberledge was Gilks, Cawley and Watkin, Veet was the Electric Monk and the Horse, Sophie Potter was Susan, Christopher Broadbent Reg, the MDChurchill was Richard, Chelsea Salyards was Sarah, The Duke of Dunstable was her father, Jan Roger Henden the waiter, Skutterz was Hawkin, Carlo Teubner read Grace and Gyurkovics Máté read the news. Gonzoid was the tea mug. The script was adapted by Gyurkovics Máté, edited by James, and produced by MDChurchill, Vincent E.L and Veet. The theme music was Paragon, and the website by Chelsea Salyards. Undergraduates are reminded that paperclips can be harmful if swallowed in large quantities."

I believe the website credit should be in there as most people will be accessing the series from said website. Also, Paragon seems to have been agreed on for now (I think) so maybe best to put that in at the moment.
...

Does this sound reasonable? Is everybody's names how they wish them to be here?

Actually, I'm gonna need a new recording from you. The one I have just sounds like a telephone, and that'd just be confusing. Plus, I think there were a couple of lines that might need changing. I'll look into it.

EDIT:
Quote:
GILKS
This time there will be no witnesses, eh?

DIRK
What?

GILKS
Look, Cjelli... Game Over.

DIRK
What?

GILKS
I do think I was quite comprehensible.

DIRK
Wait. What the Devil are you doing here in my room in the middle of the night?

GILKS
Mr Cjelli... Steve Mander, a student whose integrity is as big as your ego...

DIRK
That rat!

GILKS
Quiet, Cjelli. Anyway, Mr. Mander informed us about a certian envelope, containing tomorrow’s exam papers.

DIRK
I'm guessing that is the one stored in the staffroom?

GILKS
Precise'...I mean no, er...what this envelope contains was written by you. Under hypnosis.

DIRK
Oh, that thing? How many times do I have to emphasize? I HAVE NO supernatural powers!

GILKS
I have never stated otherwise. But you do have certain Arsené Lupin skills.

DIRK
Look, Detective Gilks, it’s half past one, I’m dizzy with alc...an...ticipation and I don’t understand a word of your jabber.

GILKS
That is not an unusual phenomenon here at St Cedd’s. What I meant, is that you are very good at stealing things.

DIRK
Oh, that's what you meant? All I heard was something about lupins and an envelope...and you've said the word "certain" twice since you barged in my room a couple of minutes ago.

GILKS
I just want to congratulate you on your filching skills.

DIRK
But why exactly, dear old Detective Gilks?

GILKS
Because - as you may know - the contents of the two envelopes - the one written by you, and the one carefully constructed by the dons of this college - are the very same. Exactly. Word for word. To the very comma.

DIRK
Wild. Do I get a coconut for this?

GILKS
No, you get a nice little prison cell for this, Svlad.

DIRK
I prefer Dirk.

GILKS
That just goes to prove you have no common sense at all. Dirk Svlad Cjelli sounds ridiculous.

DIRK
Ofcourse it does! Because it’s simply Dirk Cjelli.

GILKS
Who gives a flying pig? Constable! Please... This is Svlad Cjelli.

DIRK
Dirk... Dirk Cjelli.

GILKS
Please, take this object to somewhere where none of us can find him. Not even you.

CONSTABLE
With pleasure, Captain...

GILKS
Detective.

CONSTABLE
Detective, sorry...

DIRK
You can't do this! I don't want to go to prison with a headache! I’d be all cross and wouldn’t enjoy it!

GILKS
You won’t enjoy it anyway.

CONSTABLE
Now, come on!

Oh, and I had a suggested theme song as well. One with no lyrics, which might be a positive thing.

Um, perhaps you've got the wrong one. The one posted on the Yahoo account under the subject "Gilk's Lines" certainly doesn't sound like a telephone to me. It's a fairly high quality recording.

P.S. I agree about wanting a theme without lyrics.

Yep, will do! I won't be able to download it and get it up until tomorrow though.

Speaking of which, if anyone wants a place to upload stuff, I can give more people accounts on the blog-thingy which also has uploading capabilities. I don't know if there are any restrictions on what can be uploaded and the file size, but if there are, just let me know and I can change that. Also, if anybody can FTP and has stuff to upload, I can open an FTP account on whis-kers.org for Dirk Gently stuff. My internet connection sucks, so I'm worried it'll take an unnecessary amount of time to upload things if I have to do the download - reupload thing (not that I mind, just that in the end it wastes everybody's time. :D )

Chelsea: Blogging uploading or FTP access would be brilliant for me, I guess having a central FTP account (with the same password as the yahoo account) could be really useful for the project in general so that may be best.

Little Diddy it is, indeed. So the most up to date announcerment is now something along the lines of:
"In that episode of Dirk Gently, John Collin was the narrator, Vincent E.L was Dirk, Aaron Cumberledge was Gilks, Cawley and Watkin, Veet was the Electric Monk and the Horse, Sojo Potter was Susan, Christopher Broadbent Reg, the MDChurchill was Richard, Chelsea Salyards was Sarah, The Duke of Dunstable was her father, Jan Roger Henden the waiter, Skutterz was Hawkin, Carlo Teubner read Grace and Gyurkovics Máté read the news. Gonzoid was the tea mug. The script was adapted by Gyurkovics Máté, edited by James, and produced by MDChurchill, Vincent E.L and Veet. The theme music was Vincent E.L, and the website by Chelsea Salyards. Undergraduates are reminded that paperclips can be harmful if swallowed in large quantities."

When I try to download the file it asks me to generate a valid link, by submitting the invalid or state one. When I copy the URL You - that is to say, Dip - posted and push 'Submit' nothing happens. Erm...

Waux,

Yousendit.com seems to have issues of some kind, as some people can get it, and some peole not, also it tends to work sometimes for the same person. You could try waiting a while and trying again.

Hopefully we'll be getting some permanent FTP area to post such things in or something (see above) which would probably make things easier (many thanks chelsea!)

An FTP account is set up!

Host: whis-kers.org
Username: dirkgently@whis-kers.org
Password: <same as the group email account>

It connects to http://www.whis-kers.org/dirkgently/uploads/

By the way, my internet connection saw "27.83 MB" file and is currently trying to commit suicide. Er, I'm in the process of downloading the episode file (yay! ) now, but it may take a bit longer than I thought, and uploading could be worse. Anyone else want to upload the file? You can use the FTP stuff above, post something if you're going to upload it so I don't try it... If not, I'll still attempt it, but it might be a few more hours before it makes it up.

Ok, well, as far a I can tell, the only difference in Gilks's lines is the addition of "Exactly. Word for word. To the very comma." If everyone thinks that I should redo the scene for just these few words, I can. However, it will probably take me two weeks or so to get the time to do it.

Chelsea: Thank you. You are amazing.

F/U: Maybe it would just be better to get a version of this up without the extra line?

All: My initial version of the first episode can be found at the link below. Bear in mind the list of changes I'm wanting to make above.

http://www.whis-kers.org/dirkgently/upl ... odeOne.mp3

Many thanks chelsea! (Note, it may take about ten minutes after this post is made to finish uploading!)

Edit: I have made changes to the episode, ones of the list above, apart from the announcing, hawkin and the intro scene as we don't have the recordings yet. It's currently uploading - thus for the next 17 minutes the above file won't be available, then it will be a more up to date version :-)

Announcing

Veet - I assume you wanted to go by the name Veet in the credits, or would you prefer your full name Kalle Tahkolahti?

Also, I was always assuming the intro title would just have "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, by Douglas Adams" at the beginning and the cast at the end, but in the Theme Music thread it's suggested that some main cast members get mentioned too - "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, by Douglas Adams, starring John Collin as the Narrator [the Book?] and MDChurchill as Richard." What do people think? Also, we could always change the names of the people credited at the beginning episode-by-episode, e.g. in episode one "...starring John Collin as the Narrator, with MDChurchill and Christopher Broadbent" and in episode two "...starring John Collin as the Narrator, with MDChurchill, Christopher Broadbent, and <insert name here who plays Gordon>" Then again, I don't think that me and PJ have much more to say than anybody else, so maybe just "DG's HA by DNA" would be wiser...

I think it'd be much nicer if it was simply: Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams. Though, I don't really know.

Anyway, I managed to listen to it, at last, and it was superb! Nicely done, everone!

Seconded.

I guess it would be more "professional" to use everyone's real name, so if it's okay for the would-be announcer then I'll go by my real one, sure. I'm just worried that it could cause some confusion...

I third that also.

So the announcement is now vaguely:

"In that episode of Dirk Gently, John Collin was the narrator, Vincent E.L was Dirk, Aaron Cumberledge was Gilks, Cawley and Watkin; Kalle Tahkolahti was the Electric Monk and the Horse; Sojo Potter was Susan, Christopher Broadbent Reg, the MDChurchill was Richard, Chelsea Salyards was Sarah, The Duke of Dunstable was her father, Jan Roger Henden the waiter, Skutterz was Hawkin, Carlo Teubner read Grace and Gyurkovics Máté read the news. Gonzoid was the tea mug. The script was adapted by Gyurkovics Máté, edited by James, and produced by MDChurchill, Vincent E.L and Kalle Tahkolahti. The theme music was Vincent E.L, and the website by Chelsea Salyards. Undergraduates are reminded that paperclips can be harmful if swallowed in large quantities."

Edit: I'm uploading a further version with skutterz's temporary announcing in the mix (the one he did for his audition.) There is no point to this whatsoever.

Awesome. Is the InitialVersionofEpisodeOne.mp3 file the same as the YouSendIt file I was attempting to upload? I had to give up on uploading it last night, and I'm not going to try it again if it's already up, LOL.

Should I add Veet's real name to the cast list then?

As for the episode... Absolutely fantastic, I loved it! Two criticisms though... is "I found a pot" supposed to overlap that other line during the dinner scene (it's repeated again later)? And the other is that the dinner scene feels so long (maybe there needs to be narration breaking it up or more effects going on to keep it interesting or something). It might be too late to do anything about the latter, and if it is, then oh, well. Still sounds awesome though.

I think that for the announcing at the beginnning, it might be nice to say something like, "A Douglas Adams Continuum production."

Seconded.
So I think it should be: "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency... by Douglas Adams. A Douglas Adams Continuum production." Or maybe that should be in the end credits, as in 'It was an Above the Title production'.

That sounds good. That seems the perfect thing to add to the beginning... it sounds like there should be something <i>there</i> but cast members don't seem a good idea.

The version of InitialVersionOfEpisodeOne.mp3 is <i>not</i> the same version of the YouSendIt file - it is slightly updated with the proper theme music, temporary audition announcer, reduced hiss on the narrator and susan scene, and some small alterations also.

As for the dinner scene - it is indeed long. Post-production possible edits that we can talk about at the same time as doing episode 2 include:
* Simply cutting some of it out. This would shorten the length of the programme - perhaps we should do this at the end when we decide on a "standard" length, e.g. 30 minutes precisely (or, indeed, twenty-seven and a half. This one's currently at thirty and a half.)
* Moving the Susan scene and/or the monk scene further on to split up the dinner scene. However, this will have narration continuity issues and would make the chronological significance of the second monk scene less chronologically significant, so perhaps the former approach would be wiser - but this doesn't need to happen yet. We could always have an "uncut" version which we finalise and is at an unspecified length varying - e.g. this one 30.5 minutes, and have a "cut" version for broadcast that cuts it down to a standard 27.5-28 minutes (the length of a broadcast hitchhiker's episode.) Now where does this sound famillar...

(it would be amusing at some point to have an uncut version that's shorter than the broadcast version...)

Erm, but http://www.whis-kers.org/dirkgently/upl ... odeOne.mp3 is a more up to date, better version with my changes to the first one...

That's fine, it doesn't matter. My friend uploaded it on her computer, so it didn't take any time at all, and I have the space to waste for now. :)

Excellent work, excellent mixing especially.

However there are problems throughout the episodes i would like to be discussed and edited. Some overall points:

Some of the recording quality is poor. The quality of recording from the narrator is especially in need of improvement. And of all the performances i think this is the weakest - i dont want to be critiscing someone who's done a job 10x better than i could've done but I think we should look at having him re-recording some lines. When listening to the episode i felt myself struggling to follow when trying hard to imagine the perspective of someone unfamiliar with the book. I think the main reason was the narrator wasnt commanding enough in grabbing attention and setting up the scenes. The right recording quality would go a long way to helping this of course but some editing and re-reads are needed to perfect it.

The dinner scene is really good work but i have a feeling it needs bettered to be really GREAT work for the episode to improve. The scene is by far the hardest to perform and produce, and i really honestly respect the performances.

I have had someone who is probably within the right target audience who is also not (yet) a DNA fan listen and he didnt follow the dinner scene and didnt know what was going on in general. The problem is taking this very surreal material and making it follow-able in audio format.

My overall idea is to perhaps edit the dinner scene to be shorter, improve the narrator's recording and again i advise, if possible to slightly slow down the playback :?:

Having said all this i really want to say how impressed by i am, and that the episode really made me laugh sometimes

I welcome discussion of these points and others if anyone can be bothered?

Three comments:

1) See my above (or elsewhere) idea of having an uncut version like this, then cutting each episode to a standardesque length.

2) I think Pirate John's narration was very good myself, and I disagree with your comment of it being the weakest performance. I don't think there is one performance that is definately "weakest" and stands out below all of the others.

3) Yes, the recording quality wasn't great for some parts (i.e. background noise) but I think this is inevitable, and if we get hung up over recording qualities we'll never get anywhere, due to the nature of this project. Saying that, I'm not sure which version you listened to but at some point I used sound software to reduce the general background noise for the narrator part (the version that's online now.) If the version you heard had the Paragon music, this didn't happen, if you heard the version with the actual theme music (Fleppo's) this reduction was in.

I went through the whole episode and made notes inlcuding times of parts i thought could be better. To say that i thought in parts, and ONLY in parts i think pirate john could do a better reading is in no way slating his performance - and if we go through this whole project saying what a great job everyone is doing in every audition and reading we wont be able to improve it.

Of course the list of things I have written maybe more work than its worth but that depends on what level of production quality we want compared to how much work we want to put in. I will help out on the production side if needs be, to try and improve the editting, and im certaintly happy to chase up actors to give a different reading if it might be beneficial.

The fact is, in real projects like this, 90% of the time is spent with trial and error and re-reading, etc :) Just to emphasise my point, on TV just now they mentioned the Wallace and Gromit move - it took 5 years to make it because they only got 2 SECONDS of footage per day... if that helps illustrate my point.

Having said all that i think the newer version is a great improvement, and further improvements arent 100% neccesary. Except one thing - i REALLY think the dinner scene needs HALVED. Im totally happy to give editing it a try myself if noone else thinks it needs it, or noone else can be bothered but my mixing and production work wont be as good as yours.

Id like to add that my next stop was going to be to add my support to Fleppos latest theme music, so im delighted to hear its already been added.

Cutting the dinner scene should be a definate thing to do I think, but I think that we should be evolving episode I at the same time as moving forward with Episode II and III, as we'll probably want to keep evolving episode I as we'll never be able to get it perfect.

(Thanks for your kind words also regarding the version, forgot to say this this morning!)

I too agree that the theme music is good. I think we shall have a lot of background music and things to chose from from this project as there seem to be many of capable musicians capable of creating music, such as Fleppo, Wishkres, Myself (if that's not too modest or anything - in particular there's an instrumental piece called Clouds by the band I'm in that could be good to put in somewhere -
<advert>you can hear this at my bands website, www.paragonsound.co.uk </advert>.)
