Scotland played them 1990 and lost 1-0, (no surprise there of course)

Germany 1 Costa Rica 0 (but Germany score in the last five minutes)

I picked the same score as you for the office sweepstake, Alkamar. 2 -1 to Germany.

Probably a nervy start for the hosts with Costa Rica scoring an early goal.

Some of the guys were going over the pub to watch, but I'll trot off home early to watch with junior footie champ....talking of which if I don't head there soon, it won't be worth going in at all.

Pretty concise there, Iain. If it happens that way we'll be wanting to borrow your crystal ball.

Yeah, why bother going in. Turn on the telly and warm up for the match.

I predict that Ireland will win, but Krum will get the Snitch.

I predicted 3:1 and it went 4:2 for Germany. I'm on my way to win our local tournament bet ...

A couple of beautiful goals, the expected awful German defense and overall a great atmosphere (including our Veela Claudia Schiffer).

Sorry, have to leave, Poland vs. Ecuador has started. It will end in a draw, 1:1 to be exact.

I predict 2 - 0 to Poland....and I see from my copy that I actually went for 3 - 1 to Germany and not 2 - 1. My memory as good as the German defence.

Anyhoo....superb goals to open and close the first match.

Please may someone bind and gag Richard Dawkins?

Looks like Hass is right thus far and could stay that way unless Lampard remembers he's playing footy not rugby and stops with the conversions.

Coincidentaly, Iain, you should watch the second match today as it's your chance to see Scotland play in the world cup.

England seemed to have some trouble in the second half with Paraguay. Still, good defense.

Those Paraguayan players seem awfully fragile. They only have to kick the bal and they go down in writhing agony.

If someone kicked your balls, you'd go down writhing in agony...

It's part of the South American game - acting is a much a required skill as foot juggling.

It's embarassing. If you wonder why the sport has difficulty catching on over here, there's a pretty good reason.

was that a goal, huh? wasn´t it? my favourite so far! what a great stroke of luck for this young chap, after all the bad luck and anxiousness health-wise!
4:2, 4:2! the two costa rica goals were completely avoidable, of course (can´t say i´m impressed with lehmann - i want olli to be at least in one match!), but hey, if we always win with two more goals, bollocks to a bad defense!

i´d like to mention that england was less than convincing, or, as my learned british friend dan put it, "on the shit side of average" ...

honourable mention goes to the heroic trinidad-tobago, especially their great goal-keeper who saved the day throughout the match!

... yes, mr. nell made watch nearly every match this week-end, does it show? i´ve learned more about football in these past weeks than i have learned in my whole life.

btw, the atmosphere here in berlin (and all of germany, far as i can tell) is wonderful, everybody seems happy and relaxed, and even die hard football haters seem to cool it. all good.

Germany for Weltmeister!!!

Did anybody notice when Robinson hoofed the ball so high he hit the screens suspended over the middle of the pitch?

I'm not a football fan - I walked out of Manchester United v Liverpool once because I was bored (much more fun sat on the touchline with a 600mm lens) but I thought we were shocking in the second half.

Apparently, there is some combination of finishing table positions that could see Germany v England in the next round, that should wait till the final, shouldn't it?

Yes that stadium was awful. All those shadows on the pitch, obviously not designed by a sports fan, and putting obstacles in the air was rather a strange idea.

England will do alright I think, but they will need a bit of luck to go far.

All bias aside, I think England will do well against the better opposition.

Our squad is full of creative players, who are being asked to play overly-defensive just to avoid conceeding goals. It did not flatter them, but I understand why Sven chose that approach. The group stages are about getting across the line with the least possible effort.

I think we'll see much of the same negativity through the group stages, but come the knock-out stages, I would expect more fireworks.

I think you are right Tony but I think England need some good luck to win whereas other sides would have to have some bad luck not to win.

But in football anything can happen and it has to be said that the England team is stronger than for 40 years with a good team spirit so we shall see.

Ever the optimist....no, I am, really....I have this one down as 3-0 to England.

But I haven't guessed one result yet.

Come on you boys!!
