I figured we'll need a baseball thread. Go White Sox!

So we're not off to the best start... But our revamped bullpen is looking mighty fine, and Darin Erstad is on fire! Yeah! How's everyone else's team doing?

Reds are 3-1 after knocking the Pirates from the unbeaten deck.

Here's hoping they get around 10 more wins this season.

It seems I do this every year, but I'm willing to give 'Roidball one more chance. They'd better produce some adrenalin pumping games this year or I swear to Bob I'm done with it for good.

Round One of Sox - Yanks goes to the good guys tonight at Fenway, 7-6
in comeback fashion, beating up on Mariano Rivera in the bottom of the
eigth. He's one of the greatest closers of all time, a class act to be sure,
but the Red Sox seem to just flat out have his number sometimes. Great
game to watch, loads of high drama and a reason to celebrate in the end.

Can't wait to watch Dice-K go on Sunday.

The Real Sox are finally pulling themselves out of the dumps, thanks to the graces of Buerhle! Turn around time. He basically pitched a perfect game (he faced 27 batters).

This is about a week old but worth a look for an example of what things are like
at Fenway sometimes. Mind you, this is a game that was supposed to start at like
10:30 in the morning. Takes some effort to be completely hammered that early.

Never seen anything like this one. Sox just hit 4 home runs in a row in the
bottom of the third. Four consecutive batters, Manny Ramirez, J.D. Drew,
Mike Lowell and Jason Varitek, all gigantic bombs off of a rookie Yankee
pitcher named Chase Wright who looks completely shellshocked right now.

Just got yourself into the record books, Chase.

The fam & I took in a Reds game today. 9-3 loss to the Phillies. Ugh. Brutal.

The Reds have absolutely no offense. And the bullpen that was carrying them to some early wins is starting to show signs of weakness. The Reds' bats consist of Josh Hamilton, Javier Valentin and not much else.

Pondering their woes, I decided that you're a Reds fan for the history. Because the present doesn't look that great right now.

Might I say, Ken, nice sweep by the Sox this weekend. Anytime the Evil Empire goes down, it's a good thing.

It was very sweet indeed. Granted, very early in the season and they're
going through some tough times injury wise but it feels good to beat up on
them nonetheless. Great games, too. Comeback wins, monster home runs,
9th inning drama every night it seemed. Wonderful stuff.

And, hey, we can do it all again next week in New York.

Josh Hancock, who won a World Series last year with the Cards, was killed in a car crash this morning. Hancock also pitched for the Reds and the Sox.

Very sad.

Another jarring reminder how quickly you can have everything
ripped away from you. A matter of seconds and you're gone.

It hasn't really been all that long since Darryl Kile, either. A sad
day in St. Louis and throughout MLB.

The Reds have fired their manager, Jerry Narron. Majority owner Bob Castellini and GM Wayne Krivsky made the announcement and it sounded & looked like it was the last place they wanted to be. They were combative when the press asked questions. At one point, Krivsky started crying.

Cue Tom Hanks...

The Reds have tagged some rube named Pete Mackanin to be the interim manager (although, Krivsky considers this yokel a viable candidate). It's unbelievable what ownership has done to this team. Unfathomable. Absolutely embarrassing.

The Cincinnati Reds. The worst team in the worst division of the National League and currently the worst team in all of Major League Baseball.

What sort of shoes do you suppose Pete Mackanin wears?
Even more importantly ... do they match his mitt?

I'm not sure, but rumors are running rampant on ESPN that they came with a matching clutch.

Maybe they'll shut up about it now, I'm so sick of the hypocritical one story they're talking about steroid allegations, the next story they talk about how wonderful tonight's home run was. Just go away and shrivel up.

Perhaps a bit of bias involved on my part but this has to be the defensive play of the season.

To set the scene: The Reds and Pirates in Pittsburgh. See saw battle with its share of odd plays. The Reds took the lead in the top of the ninth, 5-4. Bottom of the ninth, the closer, David Weathers is facing the bottom of the order. Weathers gets the first two outs easily but the Pirates send Josh Phelps to the plate. Phelps, hitting .423, knocks a double into centerfield. Next up is Nate McLouth. A double or better would score Phelps, tying the game.

And now... the rest of the story.

As most of you know, I am not a fan of baseball, but this has been rather impressive to follow. A franchise record winning streak and a run at the playoffs. Almost makes it exciting.

Game 7 anyone?

Last night was whopping great fun, setting up a great night
of Baseball here. The town in buzzing this weekend and it
all comes down to one game for a trip to the Series. I don't
have supreme confidence in Dice-K to get it done but lots
can happen in a game 7 and something tells me the offense
will have a lot to say about whether or not the Sox can finish
off yet another ALCS comeback in style. Regardless, I can't
wait for the festivities to get under way.

Ok, Ken. Rockies and Red Sox. You know this demands some silly, stupid bet. I'll put up my offer first. If the Sox win, I will use an avatar of your choice for a period of one month. Vice versa if the Rockies win. You care to add to the pot?

Deal. I like that. Already searching for something appropriately humiliating.

The only thing I might add is a big fat steak dinner and a few beers when we
get the chance to hang out together someday.

The Sox and Rockies are pretty evenly matched, I think, if you look position
to position. I would have given the Sox the edge starting pitching and bullpen
until I actually looked at the numbers those guys have been putting up in the
post-season and they're pretty impressive. Home field advantage may end
up being a key factor. Fenway Park is something else in the playoffs, as the
Indians and Fausto Carmona found out when they got back here. Turned a
19 game winner into a quivering mess that couldn't throw strikes and gave up
7 runs in two innings. Young opposing pitchers tend to get a bit freaked out
here so we'll see if any of the Rockies guys are similarly affected.

Game on tonight. Josh Beckett vs. Jeff Francis.

Guess who I'm picking?
