Several Hitchhiker connections to this forthcoming BBC 2 radio series, not least of which Simon Jones as Arthur Dent, with Dirk Maggs directing.

News here at Dirk's new company website.

EDIT: daveh exercised his admin muscles and changed the date in the title to reflect reality that this got delayed from Easter to July.

Til' June, no?

Do you know if they're planning to air the original pilot along with the new episodes? I'd love to hear William Franklyn one last time.

No, it'll be July, I think.

I would expect the pilot to only ever materialise on a future CD release, but that's just a guess.

As a fan of Sexton Blake, Dirk Maggs and Simon Jones, my purchase of the CD set seems almost inevitable. :)

July, eh? (sigh)

Dirk Maggs has allowed us a first peek at our heroes; Sexton Blake (Simon Jones) his sidekick Tinker (Wayne Forrester) and the redoubtable Mrs Bardell (June Whitfield)...

Image

The show is currently believed to be airing as 6 x 15-minute episodes on Radio 2, Fridays at around 9.15pm, beginning 31 July 2009.

EDIT: The picture does not seem to be showing for me now. Can anyone else see it?

I can't wait to listen to this Sexton Blake series. 15 minutes episodes seem a bit short.

Jones certainly looks in character. The others...

I don't know. I always think the BBC publicity cast shots don't look right, but it hardly matters. As long as they SOUND the part that's all that counts.

Audio teaser trailer up now at Perfectly Normal Productions.

Keep an eye there over the next few weeks. More to come, I reckon...

The series starts 9.15pm Fridays, from July 31st on BBC Radio 2.

Hey, this just popped up over on BBC Radio 2!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00lv1rk

Sexton Blake! The name that spells hurtling adventure and doom for villainy. Britain's iconic and most prolifically chronicled sleuth explodes back into action in a brand new series of thrilling adventures; 40 years after his last public incarnation.

In a series of thrilling adventures packed with incident and hilarity, Sexton Blake (Simon Jones), and his plucky assistant Tinker (Wayne Forester), aided by Mrs Bardell (June Whitfield) battle diabolical masterminds, bewitching thieves and sinister fiends, out-thinking them in the head and out-punching them in the jaw!

This cinematic audio romp is a period-set reinvention of Blake's glory years - during the 1920s and 30s and includes a cameo appearance by BBC Radio's 1960s Sexton Blake - the late, legendary and coolly dashing William Franklyn.

New, fourth, longer video up now at Youtube...

This one is all about the scripting of the series, featuring one half of the writing partnership in the shape of Mr Mil Millington.

Mr J Nash remains a recluse to all and sundry - including Mr Millington!

Stunned silence, I imagine. The final episode has been moved back by one week to this Friday, 11 Sept. The CD is released this week too.

Well, I enjoyed it. It was VERY silly, but I like silly humor so that was okay with me.

"He's making a run for it! No time for the stairs, I'll shimmy down the drain-pipe!"

"What drain-pipe?"

"No time, Guv! Meet me in the carAAAHHHHH!" CRASH! "Bring linament!"

A highlight was the discussion between Mrs. Bardell and Mrs. Hudson. Brilliant. Why has no one done this discussion before?

I listened to the unedited episodes this weekend, and it's amazing how much was left on the cutting room floor. Some episodes had a full ten minutes hacked out! And underneath all the humor and parody the plot felt like a real Sexton Blake adventure.

Sadly the pilot episode was not included with my iTunes download. I suspect that's what they mined for William Franklyn's appearance in episode four.

I take it this did not go over that well?
