I first discovered HHGG at my aunt Beth's house when I was about thirteen or so. My cousin Ryan, who's now fourteen, went to see the movie in '05 with his mom and they both loved it. I was chatting with him on Facebook the other night and I explained about DNA and the books and he said he knew all about the books because he had a friend who pointed out the books to him after he saw the movie. He explained he spent the next two years reading the books and still has them, and he loved the books too because they were perfect for his sense of humor. I am not surprised as he is so smart for his age, his mother vowed to raise holy hell if he ever got anything less than an A, so it is no surprise that he understood the humor.

I also explained about the upcoming Eoin Colfer book to him and, like me, he was less than enthusiastic.

And it is appropriate, since he's also a Star Wars fan, that his family name is Vader.

Interesting. I found this item today on the subject of young people and DNA in an interview with the writer James Kennedy:

Quote:
I’m rather surprised, and chagrined, at the blank reaction I get at schools when I mention Douglas Adams. Most kids have never heard of him, or if they have, they’ve only heard of the Hitch-hiker’s movie—which, though it has its charms, does not adequately capture the manic intelligence of the books or radio show. But plus ça change: Few of my classmates knew who Douglas Adams when I was in high school either. Even though he’s sold millions of books, he will always be a kind of Masonic secret, known only by the smartasses goofing off in the back of the classroom.
