"Doctor Who is now immortal, reveals the BBC".

http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/ ... eveals-bbc

This makes a lot of sense. It's good to get it out there. We always knew the 12-regen limit was artificial on the basis that the Time Lords offered the Master a new set of lives once. So with the Time Lords gone, so does the limit.

And of course, this now means that the 83rd Doctor from my LEGO skits is a possibility!

One of hte comments on the Guardian website caught mey eye; about having the 12th Doctor in constant fear of something happening to him, and the series after the regeneration to the 13th Doctor would focus on the Doctor working out why he'd been given a stay of execution.

Of coruse, the whole regeneration thing relied on the William Hartnell Doctor being the first, which AFAIK was never implied or denied.

It's been confirmed a number of times, the earliest possibly being the Three Doctors (1973) but definitely in the Five Doctors (1983) and several times since. They make a BIG thing about Matt Smith being number 11 in the latest series.

In the Five Doctors, 5 clearly identifies himself as the fourth regeneration, and 1 comments on there being 5 of him. I don't know if it was made clear before then.

As I mentioned over on IMDB, where there is practically a war about this, the regenerationlimit was never supposed to limit the Doctor, it was supposed to limit the Master, and it didn't even do that, as he is on, at least, his 16th or 17th body by now. It was never supposed to have any influence on the Doctor, as his 13 regeneration was still decades into the future and what is the odds that a silly little sci-fi show goes for that long?

Canon is changed all the time, when needed. I mean, I think that we are all in agreement that the Doctor is not half-human on his mothers side. In fact, I might be tempted to compare Who to the bible, in that it is information created by dozens of people over many years, and not a lot of it squares up completely with all the other information.

Oh, and what about in Brain of Morbius?

Answer: easily ignorable, much as the whole idea of the 13 lives thingmabob that Robert Holmes came up with.

They are Morbius's past incarnations, not the Doctor's. Morbius's claims to be driving the Doctor back through his life are clearly hyperbole, on the basis that his head explodes shortly thereafter.

I knew they'd do something like this when they brought it back in 2005, I just knew it!

Well, I watched the two-part Sarah Jane Adventures "Death of the Doctor" last week and in part 2 the Doctor responded to Clyde's question, "How many times can you change?" with "507".

So that's that then. Goodness knows what they'll come up with when they approach the new regeneration limit in the year 4180, or thereabouts.

To be fair, it came off a bit flippant, so it could mean anything, really.
