So, what did you think?

Frankly, if I am generous, it might sneak up on six out of ten points. I know that I have said this before, but as long as Russell keeps doing this, it needs to be repeated. I don't know who told Russell that he could write big action stories, but he needs to be told otherwise. Some people can write big stories, about noble warriors who bravely meet their foes head to head, and some people can write people being chased through hallways and pinned in claustrophobic rooms. Moffatt quickly realised that his strenghts were in the latter, but Russell never realised that. And, and I will say this again and again, Russell has a lot of good ideas, but he also has a compulsive need to use them all, leading to scripts collapsing under their own weight.

Haven't watched it yet. But Dervlan Kirwan looked gorgeous!

She was the only good thing about it , to be honest.

I liked it better on the second viewing. Especially Tennant and Morrisey, great chemistry between the two. I could've done without the giant robot but this is the big, bold xmas special so it's got to be a noisy episode. Dickensian stuff regarding the kids, nice touches with the Doctor flashback, the fake Tardis and sonic screwdriver. Remember, these xmas specials are not made for the Whovian insiders but for the general audience and, according to the numbers, it worked again. Close to 12 milion viewers with an audience share of more than 50%.
Second only to that little show by Scratch & Co.

Ditto what Stejacorca said...also, I enjoyed it more than the last bobmas special.

Once again, RTD overloads the storyline with plenty of tidbits that can be used in future episodes. Good or bad? I think good as it fuels the anticipation for what's coming up in season 5. Keeps the Dr. Who cogs/wheels turning in my mind at least.

finally watched it and it felt like meh to me. it left me rather cold, which is very unusual with DW eps for me. also keep in mind that i am no RTD hater at all. i liked many of his stories, and there wasn´t a single ep where i couldn´t find more good than bad. this time, not so much. i don´t know why, a certain spark was missing.
a major minus for me was the lack in secondary character characterization, in which the new series usually excells. the character of rosita, for example was absolutely superfluous. she didn´t add anything to the story. same goes for the TARDIS caretaker boy. even the villainess was very limited in her personality.
the story didn´t flow, filled with unnecessary gag/action parts that didn´t add anything, and there were several hitches that felt too much like plot devices (like the prodigal son being the one and only child left up high in the collapsing work house).
also, it felt very short. i don´t know how long the special was, but it felt much shorter than last year´s, and there was very little plot spread over those minutes.
the "next doctor" thing didn´t really work for me.

in hindsight, it is a pity, a jumble of lost opportunities. because hey, the synopsis "cyberman menace an 1800-odd dickensian london on christmas eve" sounds like a wonderful promise. one that was sadly not kept.
i feel it might have worked better with a concentration on said dickensian overtones. instead of rosita, let´s have a street urchin as secondary character, who helps setting up the plot of the stolen children and to have the viewer sympathize with their fate. it worked very well in the "the empty child" two-parter. those kids were real.
here, there was barely time for sympathy. one minute they get stolen to work - in the next the structure is finished and they are ready for "deletion". no kid stand out, and the deus-ex-machina-son didn´t help.

the more i think about it, the less i like it. i´m disappointed and sad.

when does the next special come along?
