RIP.

Before there was Leno, before there was Letterman, there was Johnny Carson. Very, very sad. :(

Goodbye Johnny. The world will never see another host/entertainer of his caliber again. He was unique. The only talk show host I ever watched that you could tell he honestly cared about each and every guest, whether they be a big star or a purveyor of quail-poop jewelry. I had tears when he left the tonight show, and I had tears again today when I heard the news.

Heeeeeeeeeeeere's Johnny!

I've never seen anything from his show, I think, but it's always sad when the grand old men hands in the towel. One of the greatest personalities of Norwegian TV and stage, Erik Bye, passed away recently, and I think this is pretty much the same thing. RIP both of you, you deserve it.

EDIT: And I mean that in a good way. Man, I just realized that might sound hateful!

Although he never publically told much about his beliefs, he was
definitely a rationalist. He often had Carl Sagan on, talking about
astronomy. He also had James Randi (the great exposer of much of
tele-evangelist hoaxes, as well as fraudulent ESP'er's). There's
Johnny! (tips towel in the general direction of nebraska).

He hosted the Tonight show, before Jay Leno, for thirty years. He set the standard for the Variety shows of today. Without Johhny neither Letterman nor Leno would be in comedy.

No, Leno got the tonight show. Letterman was supposed to get it, but NBC chose Leno, in spite of promising it to Letterman. On Carsons advice Letterman then left NBC for CBS.

Ah but did you know that if it weren't for Letterman, there'd be no show for Conan.

Letterman has definitely lost his edge since moving over to CBS but back when he was doing Late Night with David Letterman on NBC, that was definitely must see TV.

My favorite bit was the time he interrupted a Today Show special by announcing via megaphone that he was Larry Grossman, President of NBC News... "and I'm not wearing pants!"

As for CBS, it has a track record of taking good things and turning them to crap.

Nor would there be any Letterman.

Before there was Carson, there was Jack Paar. And before him, Steve Allen.

But the greatest innovator, in my opinion, of television is and always will be Ernie Kovacs.

Can't argue much there, although, that can be said for any number of broadcast networks. Yigods, look what FOX did to Doctor Who.

I'm a big fan of Conan these days. I dig his humor, and looking back at the old Simpson's episodes that he did, I can completely see his influence (especially in the Sea Captain character that he conceived). The Monorail episode is a classic. All him, baby.

I guess I like my humor to be more clever and random. I used to love Letterman, but he has become less funny lately. And I never liked Leno.

As for interview style, I've always hated Leno. Especially toward hot women. You can see it in his eyes that he wants to touch them, and I keep expecting him to ask them, "Can I have sex with you?". He really creeps me out. Letterman has become more of a creepy old man toward the ladies, but at least you don't see the drool on the desk. Just on their hands after he kisses them. But Letterman in general still has a good style, and I think he is probably the best at interviews. This is definitely where he shines, other than with the ladies. Conan is definitely funny with interviews, especially if he is around hot ladies, as he almost always plays up the "I'm a dork" factor, which I really like. And he comes off as cute and funny instead of smarmy and disgusting. My biggest complaint with Conan is that sometimes he talks over guests to do a comic bit, which occasionally seems disrespectful. It just seems like he must be the center of attention all the time, which is fine when the guest is boring, but if there is something interesting being said, he needs to sit back more.

Anyway, that's my opinion. I do miss the days when Letterman did the stuff that Michael Moore started to do later. The delivering of the fruitbasket after GE took over is still my favorite bit, especially when he showed it again on his last episode at NBC.

I like Letterman. I dont like Leno. He annoys me. We dont get Conan here. We had him for a few weeks a couple of years back, and I found him funny. The last show I saw with Conan was the one where he takes Mr. T out picking apples, and I have a clip with a visit at Owl Farm, where Conan is shooting with Dr. Thompson.

I've found that to be a common thing among talk show hosts in general. They're always looking for the feed line so they can make their big joke. I'm not a huge Conan fan but, yah, I'd have to agree that he doesn't do smarmy. And for the most part, he's likable. And excessively twisted.

You know who does great interviews? John Stewart. Very conversational, doesn't run for the obvious joke, and extremely knowledgable about his guests (in most cases).

I think that Carson was from a "simpler time". When most americans
felt good about america -- mainly because we were blissfully (or
conveniently) ignorant of what the CIA and FBI were doing behind
the headlines. And of course, the racism stuff was quietly ignored
(unlike today, when it's "offiicially over"). Also, in those old
by-gone days, hispanics were practically invisible. So, it was
sort of a "Ronal Reagan's America".

Regardless, Carson (being what i would say was a "closet liberal"
continued to try to press for diversity and such). At least he was
about 200 steps up on the ladder from the Lawrence Welk show.
Carson (as well as later Leno), was an "in the know" kind of guy
and this came off in his show and the writings and topics on the
show. It was during his tenure that America "came of age" --
he started before Kennedy came to office and left about the
time that Reagan left office. As such, America went thru some
pretty substantial growing pains. And as such, i think that a lot
of people (read that middle-class) looked to his show for signs
of continuity and re-assuredness. His stuff *was* the heart of
what America was "supposed to be" -- even though as the
turbulent '60's and '70's showed more and more the injustices,
realities, and disturbing things that nobody talked about. I think
that Leno takes this as seriously as Carson did, and is prob one
reason (in my humble opinion) why Letterman was *not* given
the nod. Letterman is pretty much just an entertainer (same as
Conan) and you're not going to get anything really intelectual
out of either one of them. (Sadly enough, with the trend, i'd
have to say that Leno is a *lot* more of a pure entertainer as
well). Afterall, like i sed, earlier Carson had one of the world's
leading astronomers on (Sagan) as well as a *lot* of more
controversial speakers, etc -- he and the show started to take
a more progressive and active role in shaping what information
was presented to the people. (I see the parallels here with
Walter Cronkeit ?sp? who started "pointing" the news, as the
viet nam era progressed -- leading (according to legend) that
LBJ said "if we've lost Cronkeit [on the viet name issue], then
we've lost america".

(and turning and stepping off his soap box, the distinguished
looking poet/artist immediately ran into a wall and smashed
his hat, and then prat-falled onto sed hat)

I perfered Letterman even when I was four years old and I still do. I like Conan, though, but I'm not a fan of Leno, though. He rubs me the wrong way. In fact, I'm thinking of sueing for sexual harrasment. Jon Stewart is an exceptional interviewer.

But there will never be another Carson. I mourn his passing. When he died I mentioned it to a friend, who had never heard of him, and I was angry about that.

He will be missed.
