Would anyone be interested in throwing together a sort of one episode rendition of "Young Zaphod Plays It Safe"?

If Dirk goes well, I think it is a great idea...as would be "The Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul," but I'd recommend doing one project at a time.

Its a great idea! Although some of the descriptive prose in that story is so good that i'd feel upset having to cut most of it for a radio show :(

Seeing as the Dirk project is taking a break, I seized the opportunity and decided to try adapting Young Zaphod into a radio episode, preceding the happenings of the Primary Phase.

Here's a link to a Word file of the script at YouSendIt.com. I'm curious to hear your comments, ideas and suggestions.

I really like it. I feel like auditioning for way too many parts already. I do have one question though. What kind of dialect are the islanders? I can see you're writing something in there, but I'm not sure what locale you’re aiming for.

Two more comments.

1. I'm not sure if it's a good idea to identify the planet as Earth at the very beginning.

2. The ending seems drug out. It feels like your needlessly spelling everything out for the audience. How's about:

SO1 (Deadly serious) That capsule contains a Reagan.

SO2 (Over intercom) Roger that.

SO1 It's time to leave Mr. Beeblebrox. Galactic sector ZZ9 Plural Z Alpha must be made perfectly safe.

And then, of course, having the narration.

It's marvellous. !woot!

As for Your first observation, unno, dunno, I have no problems with it.
As for Your second observation: I think it's better as it is rignt now, 'cause in this version, the saftey officers are completely frank with Zaphod at the end and this shows that the escape of the Reagan is a real crisis. (Okay, not completely frank, but tell him much more than they did in the beginning.)

I love it! And the ending is especially fantastic, in my opinion. Are we going to do this, 'cause if we are, I'd like to at least audition. :D

I think people can start auditioning, if they really want, can't they? But to avoid all kinds of confusion, put the auditions here, use this thread.

Thank you for your encouraging comments!

First, about the Islanders, I didn't have anything specific in mind for their accents, I just wanted to make it sound primitive and not all sophisticated. (And it turned out sort of Cockney-ish, not that I have anything against Cockney people)

Second, the ending is meant to be played out at a very rushed pace, as it is a crisis; it is kind of spelling it out, but I thought would be easier on the listeners because the story is kind of obscure. And I thought Zaphod would be pretty much out at the end, and they would have to really spell it out for him too. I also wanted to suggest that Zaphod wasn't all that keen on destroying planets.

If we're going to do this, we're also going to need the mixing people (producers) and "someone to auhtorize" the whole business, as well as a cast with functioning microphones. If you want to audition, please go ahead. The roles are (may contain spoilers if you're unfamiliar with the story):

An Announcer

Narrator/The Book (this is going to be tough, I think)

Young Zaphod Beeblebrox, founder of The Beeblebrox Salvage & Really Wild Stuff Corporation

Two Safety Officials from the Safety and Civil Reassurance Administration, preferably one slightly older than the other

The Voice of the Ship, a calm version of Eddie

Two Ultra-Cricket Commentators

The Mad Man floating in the life suspension tank babbling about lobsters

The Reagan Creature

Oh, and possibly someone to do background music for the Narrator/Book parts.

I might audition for the shipboard computer (who's called Kalle by the way...) but I must warn You: I have a terrible accent and an irritating voice. Yeah...

So are we doing this? It would perhaps make a lighter easier project than Dirk to start off with, and can be something we actually finish reasonably soon. I am willing to help if needed, although not until next week (my exams finish Friday at long last :D :D :D) I could do background music and/or producing and/or the voice of the Book if people think it would be suitable mayyyybe.

Oh, it'd be great to do this during the summer and then continue with Dirk in September (I mean sorry, everyone, but summer's not good for me).

Dip, exactly my thoughts. Also, I'm dying to hear your Book audition. Would be great if we could have our own background music.

Yay, here's my audition for one of the officials. For some reason, You Send It stopped cooperating on this computer (so I couldn't hear your audition either Waux!), so I didn't have a copy of the script in front of me... but I read from the story instead. I think the part I used for my audition is the same as in the script though...

Pity, the world will never know how astonishing I am.

Wait, it works for others, right?

I have an IRRITATING voice...

It works now. It was just some Spyware thing on my computer that I had to get rid of, so it was only me. :D

I like your voice! You have a really cool accent.

Chel/Wish, I thought you read fine, but a little too fast.

Waux, you sound fine. Stop beating yourself up. I think you'd be a fine ship computer.

I can slow it down, no problem, if somebody wants me to do that part, or I could do something else... or nothing... whatever. :D I'd like to contribute somehow though.

I'm just speaking generally. I've managed broadcast journalists, and that's one of the few things I've picked up on.

I think you have potential to be the computer, Waux. Just watch those pops with the mike.

Chelsea/Whiskres, you sound very, very good.

Bring it on, people!

Thanks a bundle and I will.

(Though I'm happy I'm potential, I think Kalle should be played by a fellow Kalle.)

Hey dudes

Since DGHDA seems to have stopped (for the time being?) I'd suggest we resume progress on this (long asleep) project. I think Veet's script is great and it would be great to adapt it into a more audio medium. Many of the people (whis-kers, unno) who originally expressed an interest seem to be away now, but here I'd like to welcome anybody back who might still be interested and ask them to speak up! We also have emails into the DGHDA account asking for further auditioning for DGHDA recently, and these such people may be interested in this miniproduction instead.

I'd be happy to produce and also plan on auditioning for the book part. I think Waux would make a good Kalle also, so we need to finish the cast! The list is above.

Thoughts?

I'm deff up for this, and am willing to go for any part, including (but not limited to) Zaphod and the announcer  .

I also suggest that if people are still around, we should try and get DGHDA going again. I feel that if we dont get it going again soon, people will loose interest, and that would be a real shame, considering how far we've got with it (about half way isnt it?).
