I think either someone on this board should make an all-new theme, or we should use Bach, number six.

Does the suggestion of bach come from reading the novel? i.e. Are you aware it will be in the last episode anyway? If so then this could be a good idea or a bad idea..... it could be a good piece for the end of the series

Yeah Bach could be good for the end.

Anybody any submissions for theme music? I may try to come up with something soon if I get round to it (it's me randomly tinkering away in the background in the trailer)

I guess this should be Number Four really...

Or should be just use Journey of the Sourcerer?

Well, I've got a song we could use. Recorded it earlier today.
How about this one?
Just kidding.
Hahaha.

I could work on some new/original music.

Anybody else out there willing to help me out with a score?

I'm not very good at orchestration but I do have experience in music and I have Finale 98 to transcribe a score. We'll just need people who can perform it.

I can provide incidental music, just don't think I'm up to coming up with a theme tune... If you do come up with something Zed that would be groovy :)

Should we make a poll about choosing an original tune, some of those suggested above or maybe even Journey?

Could have a poll. I think it should be original, but Journeyesque.

Yep..the same from the IMDB.

I wrote a basic DIRK theme this morning. Ya know, a theme for him, an overall theme for the beginning music I guess.

Its very chromatic and dopey sounding.

For those of you out there who can play, its:
B Bflat A Bflat A Aflat Eflat F

Play it with a bounce, but not too much, make it sad sounding...[/img]

Yep..the same Zed from the IMDB.

I wrote an idea for a musical theme this morning.
I tried to think of Dirk in a musical term.

A theme for him.
A theme that'll be the basis for an intro.

For those of you who can play...its

B Bflat A Bflat A Aflat Eflat F

Play it so it sounds sad....with a little bounce to it.

I'll try to later tonight.

Think of Bill Murray's theme from the movie Stripes.

Zed, I can imagine that kind of thing being quite good. Looking forward to hearing your recording :-) (also, are you still interested in playing Gordon in future episodes (he's not in the first))

No Windows Sound Recorder? Ick.

I like to use Audacity (already recommended elsewhere), which you can download at http://audacity.sourceforge.net

If you are having trouble recording period and just want to make a MIDI (all you'd have to do is pretty much type up the sheet music behind it), you can use Noteworthy Composer -- http://www.noteworthycomposer.com

I'm not completely sure those URLs are right, but my computer's being stupid so I can't double-check 'em.

Zed, I really recommend a program called "RecordPad" which is very lightweight and small, allows one to record, and can save in variable bitrate mp3. It can be found

http://nch.com.au/recordpad/index.html

there.

I explained the whole idea of Dirk to my wife and played what I wrote for her, and she loved it.

I have a suggested theme tune. I thought rather than just uploading the whole 5 minute song, it would be better to upload something to see how the small segment of it would sound in context. The song has vaguely appropriate lyrics also, so could be appropriate. Also, copyright won't be an issue, as it's of a band that myself (and, indeed, skutterz) is in. Follow the link:

http://users.ox.ac.uk/~kebl2148/Dirk/music.mp3

In it I have voiced various parts that obviously different people will be voicing, just put it there to see how it would sound with the theme. Also, the recording of said recordings isn't that great cos I wasn't really bothered about taking out the fuzz as it was just a prototype thing.

Lol, what version is that? I thought we had a better version. Also, we'd need to just check thats its ok with the rhivmeister (not that that would be a problem), but that could be quite good. Like you say, it has fairly appropriate lyrics.

Lets hear what Zeds got too though.

Though I'm not sure it would be so good to have a theme song with lyrics.
I believe something instrumental would work better.
Nice song, nonetheless.

Quite nice, enjoyed it except being one of the ones being credited as "etc etc" actually keep it that way for the official version.

Also, we'll have to re-write some of the narrator parts, like that one that says Dirk hasnt appeared.

Although I fear I shall look very full of myself, since I'm posting a theme suggestion and an audition on the same day, I humbly submit:

http://s38.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=34HU ... W7Q8K6M4EK

It's a rough version of a song I did a while back (I could rerecord it with real drums and a real piano...and a metronome) Anyway, it's kinda happy, and it was heavily based on Bach, so I thought it suited a Dirk Gently series.

BTW, if we use any music that we didn't create ourselves, shouldn't we use something from Bach?

What about some Floyd? I popped "Wish You Were Here" in my PC a second ago and the synth beginning of Shine On You Crazy Diamond struck me as a good candidate.
