In light of recent news, should our talented international young Continuumers finish their production of Dirk Gently?

Well of course they should continue! There's no reason that fans can't do their oiwn productions even if the professionals are doing them too. Ask DB!

Please, ya'll! Don't stop!

I too think that what we've been doing is really great, and great fun. I am not proposing that we stop! The Dirk Maggs production would not be competition clearly - it would be on a completely different scale, it is being done in a completely different way etc. It's just that if we were to continue, it would always be shadowed by the far better version and it just seems to make more sense to move onto a different project. What we have done here would not be wasted, we have a great team of people and we can continue to do a radio adaptation of something quite Adamsy. It's just it makes more sense to do something else, rather than doing something that is already being done professionally (c.f. it would be silly for us to do a radio adaptation of Life, the Universe and Everything for example.)

I would never suggest that we would stop this project - that would be a huge shame as it is a very positive thing. I'm just suggesting that we move our attentions elsewhere.

Keep going, it'll give Mr Maggs something to aspire to.

They'll never get a title theme as marvellous as ours!

But I do hope they have a Horse, too.

Tis a good point, and it'd be a shame to let those things go to waste.

I voted yes. We should continue on!

But... if, for some reason, we move on to something else, I have an idea.

(Sorry for whoring my dad's stuff)

Maybe we could do this? It's Hitchhikian. And the narrator is part of the story.

But, all in all, I think we should continue with Dirk.

Im not sure that is lends itself to well to radio adaptation as it has a lot of description and narration. Having said that my own opinion is that the DG series we're producing just now is sort of on the borderline of being a dramatised audiobook rather than an outright radio drama. Young Zaphod Plays it Safe could probably be produced quite nicely in the same way.

Its well documented that I dont like too much narration unless the narrator can connect with the audience somehow.

e.g. Red Dwarf's abridged audiobook series read by Chris Barrie has heavy narration (well it would being an audiobook) but what makes it work is:
a) All the fans connect immediately with Chris Barrie's voice.
b) He does (superb) impressions of the characters when he reads dialogue.
c) Good use of sound effects to liven it up.

With young Zaphod plays it safe, (I know its a bit early to be making suggestions, especially since I dont approve of axing the DG series), I wouldnt mind trying out the narrator being played by the same person who does the voice of young Zaphod. NOT neccesarily narration by the character of Zaphod, and NOT in the same voice as Zaphod - but something almost but not quite recognise-able.

Sorry for persisting on this point I have about narration...
In fact, the only reason I find narration a problem area with our DG is probably because the story is multi-strand, leaving some listeners somewhat lost. In Young Zaphod Play's it Safe I think the story is pretty much single strand, could be relatively simple and problem free to adapt and produce...

Another option could be The Salmon of Doubt. Would be a very ambitious venture to try and do it any kind of justice - unless anyone who's read it has clear ideas of where it's going? Surely there's a thread on this site somewhere discussing it...?

I thought about 'The Salmon of Doubt.' I think it would be a very interesting venture. It would just consist of single readers reading the entries. And then when an entry was a story with characters etc then we would act it out and edit it together like we have been.

For instance, the entry called 'The Book That Changed Me,' We could have someone be 'The Interviewer' and read the questions and have another person be 'Douglas Adams' and very conversationally read the answers. The sections with just a single reader could be recorded by anyone and everyone who wanted to. We would just have different versions/interpretations of the same piece. The entry titled 'My Nose' would probably be interpreted and read completely differently when Jamie does it than when skutterz does it or I do it etc.

I think it could be really neat. Though I dont know about copyright infringement by simply reading the text, it may be forbidden it may not be as far as I know. But, I would like to continue with Dirk Gently though.

If you send a copy to Dirk_Gently_Radio@yahoo.co.uk then a few of us will have access to it.

Thanks
