Sam Raimi (Spider-Man 3) will direct The Wee Free Men, an adaptation of Terry Pratchett's best-selling young-adult fantasy novel, Variety reported. Sony Pictures Entertainment has acquired the book and set Pamela Pettler to write the script.

That is just superb! Hot diggity! Thanks for that, Serenity!

Pamela Pettler wrote the screenplays for Corpse Bride, so it should work out nicely.

Maybe she could be a good person to have a nice 45 minutes with in the DAC Comfy VIP Chat Chair?

Yes, totally agree. This is very, very good news. Finally a Pratchett novel comes to the silver screen. About freakin' time! But, though I do like "Wee Free Men" and "A Hat Full of Sky", it seems odd that "Wee" was chosen as the first novel-to-big budget film instead of another great story from the main Discworld line. I'd love to have seen one of the Death stories, like "Reaper Man" or "Mort". Of course, "Guards! Guards!" has had a long history of trying to get to the big screen. Strange that it was passed up once again for "Wee". Oh well, at least this is a HUGE stepping stone for Pratchett. Even better that Sam Raimi is helming it, though I would have liked Terry Gilliam. As the classic HHGTTG saying goes, "After this, things can only get better."

But the big question is will there be a special limited edition directors cut box set DVD for you to buy on the day of release?

i´m also glad because having a pterry book come to the big screen can´t be anything else. i also wonder at the choice, but maybe the reason is that you don´t need to explain the whole discworld lore when you choose to adapt this story which basically stands on his own and could theoretically take place anywhere. other reasons might be that you´re neatly avoiding the outcry of rincewind/witch fans by adapting a watch novel and thrice versa. plus i think pterry is testing the water here: he´s been very wary of handing over DW to hollywood, because he doesn´t want his lovingly crafted world ruined by a bad adaptation.

these might all be the good and true reasons, but i am surprised that a director would choose "wee" for a big screen adaptation. don´t get me wrong, i like the book, but it´s a comparatively "small" story.

i always thought that the best way to adapt pterry books to moving pictures would be high-class, serialized tv movies or shows.

Small stories are more suitable for movie making.

Nell,
Have you read the Johnny ones yet? Very quick reads, some one of your cailbre could see each one off in a lunchhour or two.

So I should check that book out, eh? What is it like? I mean to say, what does the Pratchett-o-meter show?

That, however, is a pretty neat idea.

Very good points, Nell. Totally agree with you, especially on the idea that Pratchett books, unless the story is short and not as complex, are best for TV mini-series shows instead of the big screen. Actually, I'm very surprised there hasn't been any adaptations of the novels in the mini-series format so far. I'd definitely get the director of The Third Kingdom series if one ever got greenlit, since that show was excellent.

Do you mean The Tenth Kingdom or is that something different?

Ah jeez, I can't believe I typed Third instead of Tenth. Yes, I meant The Tenth Kingdom. Thanks for pointing out that stupid mistake. Guess I didn't proof-read as carefully as I thought.

That's some good news. I loved Wee Free Men. To me, it represented a return to the humo(u)r of the first couple of books. And I'm glad they're getting someone not named Peter Jackson to helm it.

far as i heard, pterry is dead against it or at least very, very wary. he once said something along the lines of "a lot or producers/directors have promised to make me rich with a movie adaptation, but none has promised me that i´ll be happy with that".

btw, shouldn´t this thread be moved to the "moving pictures" section?

I went to a talk / pubbing in Oxford with Stephen Briggs who basically said that pterry doesn't really need the money so the only reason he would let a film adaptation of a discworld book go ahead would be if he thought it would be sufficiently good - but if such a thing did happen (e.g. if somebody came up to him and said "Hi, I'm Peter Jackson, I'd like to adapt one of your books" - that wasn't my joke, was Stephen Briggs') he would be happy for it to go ahead.

Whilst P'terry adaptations have been strangely absent from the big screen, there have been a few radio adaptations of note. Mort, Guards! Guards! and The Amazing Maurice were all made into excellent radio plays. Wyrd Sisters also made it onto the radio (but it's not as good as the others)

Not to mention the fact that Wyrd Sisters and Soul Music have been made into TV-series (Which it just so happens I've got on preorder from Play.com

And the thoughtful Seymour sent them to me for listening enjoyment! They are all quite fun!

has anyone heard any more of this? Do poke about and see what you can find. Year of release will be 2008. There's stuff about it at imdb.com but only in the pro section, which they charge you 13 dollars a month for... (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0498344/)
