Stageshow Dirk, based on Dirk Gentlys Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams premiered on Friday. A mail has arrived from Scot Burklin, spokesman for the show:
Quote:
It felt REALLY great last night. We had a number of reviewers in the audience, so it will be interesting to hear what they say. I did speak with someone from a smaller publication and the worst thing they could say was that they were confused at times, which we expected could be a possibility with such a complex story. Other than that, they loved the actors and the spectacle of the multimedia. On the fan side, we had several members of a Sci-Fi club from Southern California in attendance, and they said they loved it. To me, that's almost more important than a reviewer, as this is a production by fans FOR fans, (or that's how we've tried to view it anyway). Anyhow, LA Times and Variety were both there so we should know what they thought fairly soon. I'll pass on reviews and links to them as they come in.

Hi there.

It is SOO much fun that guys like you actually take your time to come here and write these things to us. We do really appreciate it, you know.

We will certainly follow and monitor news regarding your show and as soon as you find something that you believe is interresting to us, feel free to post it here.

The only sorrow that I (and many else) feel is that many of us are living in europe and will never be able to attend your show.

If it is at all possible, have you ever thought about filming the show and selling it on DVD or something? The production cost doesn't have to be that big (3-5 DV cameras, a post production editing system and a few weeks of work will do). You won't become a millionaire of it but you would make many of us very happy.

Best of luck to you all.
/Totta

Hi Scott,
I sent you a mail on this but I guess things are pretty busy at the moment so here goes again:

I have created a short page on Wikipedia about Dirk. I was looking for input from you in two areas
1. Persmission to use any of the pictures posted here and on Nicolas' site.
2. Help with expanding the "differences from the book" bit - what is there is from my memory (I saw the Playhouse and Abingdon shows), would be great to get some more detail from the script.

Would live to come see it but I think my wife might kill or divorce me if I spend $1000 to go see a show!

Scott

So glad you've had the time to post on here, fancy doing an online chat after the play has finished?

Oh Gusty, regarding

wikipedia wrote:
Another problem exists in the scene where Dirk and Richard are walking along the bank of the Grand Union Canal and Richard is supposed to dive in the canal when he hears the words "My old maiden Aunt who lived in Winnipeg". It would be rather difficult to have a canal on stage so this replaced by Richard dancing the Bossa-Nova and many people remember this as the one of the funniest parts of the play.

You never seen Way Upstream? They have a flowing river on stage for that one

Thank you, Scot, for keeping us informed, I wish I could be there to watch. Unfortunately even my ressources are limited. Anyway, great stuff you're doing there. Highly appreciated!

Hi gang,

Sorry it's taken a couple of days, but I have a few minutes to pop on before leaving for work and thought I'd answer a couple of questions and post some great news.

First, the great news... our first review from a major publication, (Variety) has hit. You can read it here:

http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117931768?categoryId=33&cs=1

Hopefully, this week will see additional reviews come in. I'll post them as soon as I can. Now, on to the questions!

Totta - We'd love to commit this production to film, even if only for our own archival purposes, but unfortunately we are legaly bound to not do such things. What we are considering, however, is conducting some cast and crew interviews and backstage tours and posting them as video blogs and podcasts on our DirkUSA site. Our webmaster is also our multimedia wrangler and our co-sound designer, so he's obviously been a bit wrapped up with getting the show open. We hope to start ramping up the site again in the next two weeks, though, and you should all start seeing some neat stuff there. I'll keep everyone posted when we start. We have some ideas as to the things we'd like to show, but if anyone has anything they'd like to see please post it here and, (provided we move forward with the idea) we'll try to cover it.

Gusty - Sorry for the lack of response. Lee, (our webmaster) has gone through the e-mail several times and we can't find your stuff. I'm not sure if it got kicked back or filtered out or what. Anyhow, awesome job on the Wiki! We wanted to do that as well and, like so many other ideas we had, it got tabled for the purposes of getting the show open. As far as the photos go, I'll send you a PM.

Ol' Peculier - I'd love to do an online chat with the folks here. Actually, it might be fun to have both Jenz and Nicolas tag team arranging something like that, as they've both been so fantastically helpfull with all other aspects of getting awareness about the production out there.

Well, gotta head out the door now. Thanks again to everyone for following along and being so supportive. Continue to post questions, if you have them, and I'll continue to answer!

Scot

Sorry...

Just realized that Gusty had a second question. I'll try to address that sometime today or tomorrow morning if I can.

Hey gang,

Sorry my appearances have a been a little few and far between. My schedule's been insanely busy, even with the show open. Anyhow, a couple of quick things...

Our web site has been updated! It's minor, but all of our production photos are now up. Check them out at http://www.dirkusa.com

The Arvind Q&A will take place on Saturday, November 18th. If you're able to attend the show at all, I would HIGHLY suggest coming on this night. Should be pretty cool, (we may try to tape it and post it on the web site... more on that later if we do so...)

Someone started a Digg story about us! It's at http://digg.com/offbeat_news/Douglas_Adams_Dirk_Gently_Stage_Play_Currently_Running_In_Los_Angeles If you get a chance, please go there and "Digg It" so we can get some coverage

I think that's everything for now. The run continues to go well and thanks, to all of you, for your continued support!

Though, it'd be very different, was she to opt for the former option, because it's trickier to get a new life.

Ah, 'tis obvious you haven't met me. Women foolish enough to marry me are few and far between. I've got to hang on to this one.

Hey! Women adore me too, you know?

I often have them knocking on my door all through the night....last time they made so much noise I had to get up and let them out...
