I first read both Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn over forty years ago and didn't need to be told that even though people thought and spoke a certain way in the late 1800's, that didn't mean it was appropriate or acceptable in the 1960's and 70's. Certainly today's children are much more savvy than I was at the same age. Give the kids some credit! Better yet, have actual conversations with your children/students about what they're reading. UGH
