Okay so i recently bought a whole slew (read 14) of Patrick O'Brian's Jack Aubrey seafaring novels (Master And Commander) and have realised that Mr O'Brian wrote his books for one person, and that was him. And it's brilliant! This is an author that seems to have written incredible historical fiction with complete disregard for anyone except himself, and we are lucky enough to be able to share in his 20 book epic.

If you have seen the Russell Crow film Master And Commander - The Far Side Of The World then you have only scratched the surface of this particular cashcow. Patrick O'Brian's books are outstanding.

well, mj, i think you wouldn´t find a greater aubrey/maturin fan on this forum than me! i first saw the movie, then discovered that it was based on a whole flock of books. read them all, one after another, and i can´t remember when, as an adult, i was so completely engulfed in a book.
the characters are so lively, and the stories feel not so much like some constructed novel, but as if o´brian had translated the real-life memories of a seafaring man. anything can happen.
especially the main characters felt so alive to me, iwas absolutely immersed in their luck and loss.
having said this, i felt the movie was one of those rare congenial adaptations. i´ve watched it maybe a dozen times, and i´ve read the whole book series twice. thanks for reminding of this excellent piece of literature!
