I haven't read them, but I'm planning to. I've read the Hornblower series by C. S. Forester a couple of times, though, they have the same theme.

ITV in the uk made a TV series of Hornblower.

I have to say I watched the first episode not knowing it was based on a book. Was most dissapointed. I'd heard the words hornblower and seamen in the trailer and got the wrong end of the stick entirely... Was not what I was expecting...

I think I've seen each and every episode of that... good stuff, but not as good as Master and Commander (the movie). But of course, they play in different leagues, budget-wise.

from what i´m told, the style and the way of story-telling is also quite different. but if you´ve seen and like the m&c-movie, i´m sure you´ll love the books. the movie is a work of genius in transporting the important elements of the book to screen.
the movie´s storyline is mainly based on book 10 of the series, and i´m slowly approaching it. i´m near the end of book 5, "the fortune of war". it´s always a great experience to read a book where you really care for the characters!
