so the martians are not from mars.
where are they from?
"they're already here" - they were here all the time?

plot spoilers please!

i don´t think they mean us to take it this way. i think they want to spice up the old warning "they are coming!". "they are already here" sounds more dramatic. maybe they want to cash in on the old radio version hype where people thought they were listening to a real broadcast*.
i don´t know details, but i´m convinced that in this movie too we´ll get to see how the martians arrive on earth.

*oh, and before anybody goes again like "the stupid sods, how could they have been so naive?" - have you listened to the original broadcast? i recommend it to anybody, it´s been done very, very well - completely integrated in the normal radio programme. i doubt they could pull off something like it today, the stations just wouldn´t allow it.

Additional dittos and huzzahs... what Wells did that night with the production was a mark of genius. It's another great indication of the superiority of radio to television. For all intents and purposes, it sounds like a normal radio broadcast that gets interrupted by a news flash. Seek it out if you haven't heard it yet.

Orson Welles broadcast was brilliant. My dad had it on vinyl for many years. He remembers the night well. People absolutely out of their heads with fear and panic. The key thing that happened that night was that there was, I believe, a Presidential radio broadcast on another station that overlapped the beginning of War of the Worlds. Many People finished listening to the president before switching to the Mercury Theatre, thus missing the introduction explaining what they were about to hear.

There was one time I searched for a sound file of the broadcast, but couldn't find anywhere on Internet.

I never heard it. Anyone knows where I can get it?

Faulty links? It works fine for me. I don't think it's the link that's faulty.

I'm thinking maybe you can see it because it's cached on your system.
But that doesn't help the rest of us any, now does it?

Ok, I cleaned out my cookies and my cache, and the link still works for me. Is it just MG or is everyone having problems with that link?

I think it's everyone, it works after I rightclick 'view picture', but it's not the first picturelink in DAC to behave like that

Ok, so I guess I understand now. The link you're having trouble with is the picture in the Intro Forum, but you're bitching about it here in the WotW thread. It seems I've been in the wrong state of mind. I forgot to adjust my logic circuits from NormalLife 5.0 to DACForum 2.DOH!

You did all you could do MG. I thought it was a problem with both links, and this one seemed more important to fix than just a silly pic. I think I'll go have a Pan Galactic Gargleblaster and forget about the whole evening. It's been a long week.

er, can someone answer my original question? where are they from then, if not from mars?

and i heard the Welles broadcast repeated on BBC Radio 4 in 1996. found it a little tedious to tell the truth. especially the second half, which is just Welles droning on.

ever heard Jeff Waynes's 1979 musical version? with Richard Burton as the narrator? infinitely superior. and if a musical version sounds silly, it isn't. it really is a fantastic 4 LP album. ask anyone who's heard it.
