I happened to notice that Dilbert artist Scott Adams mentioned Hitchhikers Guide in his blog recently:

His point was that humor based on reality is more popular now than it used to be. His example:

"The reality-as-humor trend is a fairly recent phenomenon, at least in its fullness. In my opinion, Douglas Adams' Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series wouldn't have been successful if it came out today. In its time, it was a treasure. Society's notion of humor evolves."

Actually, I don't agree. Hitchhikers Guide was very much based on notions of reality.

Yeah, I also disagree that Douglas Adams' humor is dated. I think only a few of his concepts are, such as the Hitchhiker's Guide itself shows its age. I think someone reading it today would be more likely to say, "Yeah, I practically have a Hitchhiker's Guide on my phone." When it came out, it was definitely sci-fi.
