Ages ago I heard that "Out of the trees" (one TV episode by DNA and Graham Chapman) had POSSIBLY been rediscovered on some ancient home video system.

I was wondering if there has been any news since?

(One fragment was already known to survive, but it wasn't on youtube so I can't link to it.)

Indeed.
It was shown at the NFT on December and a bunch of us went

A vaguely amusing curiosity

I'd still like to see it. That and Jake's Journey. But yah, I'd like a chance to dismiss it with actually seeing it.

Hell, I'd read the script if I could get my pudgy lil fingers on them.

*hint hint*

There are short snippets of the peony sketch (with Simon Jones and Graham Chapman) in 'The Making of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy' on the BBC DVD of the 'Hitchhiker' TV series. The film inserts have always existed in the BBC Film & Video Library at Windmill Road, London. These inserts include a fair bit of the Genghis Kahn sketch as well, with Chapman as Kahn and Mark (Zaphod) Wing-Davey as one of his men.

Presumably the BFI/NFT have now returned a copy of the recovered programme to the BBC archive?

I know that. I was just looking for something... y'know... a bit more tangible.

For the record, part of the "Severance of a Peony" sketch appears in Graham Crackers: Fuzzy Memories, Silly Bits, and Outright Lies.

It was supposed to be in "What the Pythons did Next" which was shown at New Year but I didn't see so can't confirm.

NFT = National Film Theatre?
(BFI I know)

I knew about the film inserts and had seen the small bit on the 80's series DVD.
I also saw the script (yim joakum had it taken offline) and wasn't really impressed, but then again, I thought, perhaps it is meant to be seen and not to be read.
(Jake's journey by the way is a different story, not involving DNA, and it would have made a nice series if writer & actor Graham Chapman hadn't died.)

Anyway, was the quality any good?
I suppose it will not make it to DVD anytime soon...

On the whole I would say that it is somewhat Python like in nature, and unfortunately not the best of Python, although it does have its moments. The Genghis Khan stuff I liked but it did drag on a little. The Firemen stuff I didn't like even if there was a black fez worn by Simon Jones (I think) at one point. I liked the Peony sketch and the railway stuff that was the interlinking was a little hit and miss but an interesting concept which is the thing that sets it apart from Python.

The publicity that surrounded the event indicated that the restoration involved building a player for the obscure format that the off air recording was made on. See http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/6150254.stm

The quality is probably deemed to be not releasable or broadcastable apart from clips. There was some flickering on the whole picture at the beginning and some at the bottom of the picture for much of the showing.

Has anyone got a copy of the script from when it was online?

Well, not EVERY episode of monty python is funny all the way, either.

There were too many early home video systems, that is for sure. Perhaps one day it will be on DVD so I can check for myself.

Again, for the record, a second, slightly funnier script for OTT is available in the book, Calcium Made Intersesting.

You mean, a different version of the same script? Or a script for a second episode?

Is there any attribution for the second OOTT script in that book?
My understanding was that it was mainly Graham Chapman and David Yallop.
Was there any Douglas Adams contribution at all?

I suppose you guys also know about the script for a show starring Ringo Starr, that Graham and Douglas wrote?

No. The credit is to Chapman and Yallop.

It's in here. It's not bad. It's not great either. But it had potential.

We Will Never Know. But reading both scripts, I thought the Ringo Starr story was the better of the two.

OK, that was 5 years ago. Today it seems someone has uploaded the entire show on youtube, especially for Towel Day 2012.
I can see why it didn't make it, but there are funny moments, in any case, I wasn't bored.
